Cetacean abundance and distribution in European Atlantic shelf waters to inform conservation and management
Philip S. Hammond,Kelly Macleod,Per Berggren,David L. Borchers,M Louise Burt,Ana Cañadas,Geneviève Desportes,Greg P Donovan,Anita Gilles,Douglas Gillespie,Jonathan Gordon,Lex Hiby,Iwona Kuklik,Russell Leaper,Kristina Lehnert,Mardik F. Leopold,Philip Lovell,Nils Øien,Charles G. M. Paxton,Vincent Ridoux,Emer Rogan,Filipa I. P. Samarra,Meike Scheidat,Marina Sequeira,Ursula Siebert,Henrik Skov,René Swift,Mark L. Tasker,Jonas Teilmann,Olivier Van Canneyt,José Antonio Vázquez +30 more
TL;DR: The entire EU Atlantic continental shelf was surveyed in July 2005 to generate robust estimates of abundance for harbour porpoise and other cetacean species, and abundance in 2005 was similar to that in 2004.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identifying critical areas and habitat preferences of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus
Simon N. Ingram,Emer Rogan +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the findings of a 2-yr study of habitat use by bottlenose dolphins in the outer Shannon estuary on the west coast of Ireland and suggest that the identification of critical areas within a population's range is a priority when planning any conservation management strategy for marine mammals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rise of oceanographic barriers in continuous populations of a cetacean: the genetic structure of harbour porpoises in Old World waters.
Michael C. Fontaine,Michael C. Fontaine,Stuart J. E. Baird,Sylvain Piry,Nicolas Ray,Krystal A. Tolley,Sarah Duke,Alexei Birkun,Marisa Ferreira,Thierry Jauniaux,Ángela Llavona,Bayram Öztürk,Ayaka Amaha Öztürk,Vincent Ridoux,Emer Rogan,Marina Sequeira,Ursula Siebert,Gísli A. Víkingsson,Jean-Marie Bouquegneau,Johan Michaux,Johan Michaux +20 more
TL;DR: This work applies a combination of recent individual-based landscape genetic approaches to investigate the population genetic structure of a highly mobile extensive range cetacean, the harbour porpoise in the eastern North Atlantic, with regards to oceanographic characteristics that could constrain its dispersal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Investigating potential associations between chronic exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and infectious disease mortality in harbour porpoises from England and Wales.
Paul Jepson,Peter M. Bennett,C.R. Allchin,Robin J. Law,T. Kuiken,J.R. Baker,Emer Rogan,James K. Kirkwood +7 more
TL;DR: Findings are consistent with the hypothesis that chronic PCB exposure predisposes harbour porpoises in UK waters to infectious disease mortality, although further research is required to test these associations more robustly.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to heavy metals and infectious disease mortality in harbour porpoises from England and Wales.
Peter M. Bennett,Paul Jepson,Robin J. Law,B.R. Jones,T. Kuiken,J.R. Baker,Emer Rogan,James K. Kirkwood +7 more
TL;DR: Post-mortem investigations on 86 harbour porpoises found that mean liver concentrations of Hg, selenium (Se), the Hg:Se molar ratio, and zinc (Zn) were significantly higher in the propoises that died of infectious disease compared to healthy porpoise that died from physical trauma.
