Journal ArticleDOI

Warfarin versus aspirin for stroke prevention in an elderly community population with atrial fibrillation (the Birmingham Atrial Fibrillation Treatment of the Aged Study, BAFTA): a randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: These data support the use of anticoagulation therapy for people aged over 75 who have atrial fibrillation, unless there are contraindications or the patient decides that the benefits are not worth the inconvenience.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prevalence of left-ventricular systolic dysfunction and heart failure in the Echocardiographic Heart of England Screening study: a population based study.

TL;DR: It is suggested that assessment of left-ventricular function in patients with suspected heart failure could lead to more effective diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.
Journal ArticleDOI

Systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis of diagnosis of heart failure, with modelling of implications of different diagnostic strategies in primary care

TL;DR: A simple clinical rule was developed: in a patient presenting with symptoms such as breathlessness in whom heart failure is suspected, refer directly to echocardiography if the patient has a history of myocardial infarction or basal crepitations or is a male with ankle oedema; otherwise, carry out a BNP test and refer for echOCardiography depending on the results of the test.
Journal ArticleDOI

Impact of heart failure and left ventricular systolic dysfunction on quality of life: a cross-sectional study comparing common chronic cardiac and medical disorders and a representative adult population.

TL;DR: Quality of life in patients found to have heart failure, LVSD, and other cardiac and medical conditions are compared with the randomly selected general population sample and optimising treatment to improve NYHA class appears to improve perceptions of quality of life for patients with heart failure.
Reference EntryDOI

Eradication of Helicobacter pylori for non‐ulcer dyspepsia

TL;DR: H pylori eradication therapy has a small but statistically significant effect in H pyloris positive non-ulcer dyspepsia and an economic model suggests this modest benefit may still be cost-effective but more research is needed.
