The HadGEM2 family of Met Office Unified Model climate configurations
Nicolas Bellouin,William J. Collins,I. D. Culverwell,Paul R. Halloran,Steven C. Hardiman,Tim Hinton,C. D. Jones,R. E. McDonald,A. J. McLaren,Fiona M. O'Connor,Malcolm J. Roberts,José M. Rodríguez,S. Woodward,Martin Best,M. E. Brooks,Andrew Brown,N. Butchart,Christopher Dearden,S. H. Derbyshire,I. Dharssi,Marie Doutriaux-Boucher,John M. Edwards,Pete Falloon,Nicola Gedney,Lesley J. Gray,Helene T. Hewitt,M. Hobson,M. R. Huddleston,J. Hughes,Sarah Ineson,William Ingram,William Ingram,P. M. James,T. C. Johns,Colin E. Johnson,A. Jones,C. P. Jones,Manoj Joshi,A. B. Keen,Spencer Liddicoat,Adrian Lock,A. V. Maidens,James Manners,Sean Milton,J. G. L. Rae,Jeff Ridley,Alistair Sellar,Catherine A. Senior,I. Totterdell,Anne Verhoef,Pier Luigi Vidale,Andy Wiltshire +51 more
TL;DR: The HadGEM2 family of configurations as discussed by the authors includes atmosphere and ocean components, with and without a vertical extension to include a well-resolved stratosphere, and an Earth-System (ES) component which includes dynamic vegetation, ocean biology and atmospheric chemistry.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Large Eddy Simulation Intercomparison Study of Shallow Cumulus Convection
A. Pier Siebesma,Christopher S. Bretherton,Andrew Brown,Andreas Chlond,Joan Cuxart,Peter G. Duynkerke,Hongli Jiang,Marat Khairoutdinov,David C. Lewellen,Chin-Hoh Moeng,Enrique Sánchez,Bjorn Stevens,David E. Stevens +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an intercomparison study on undisturbed trade wind cumulus convection under steadystate conditions as observed during the Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment (BOMEX) with 10 large eddy simulation (LES) models was performed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large‐eddy simulation of the diurnal cycle of shallow cumulus convection over land
Andrew Brown,Richard T. Cederwall,Andreas Chlond,Peter G. Duynkerke,Jean-Christophe Golaz,Marat Khairoutdinov,David C. Lewellen,Adrian Lock,M. K. Macvean,Chin-Hoh Moeng,Roel Neggers,A. P. Siebesma,Bjorn Stevens +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, large-eddy simulations of the development of shallow cumulus convection over land are presented, and the results are shown to be encouragingly robust with similar results obtained with eight independent models, and also across a range of numerical resolutions.
Journal ArticleDOI
A global perspective on Langmuir turbulence in the ocean surface boundary layer
Stephen E. Belcher,Stephen E. Belcher,A. Grant,Kirsty Hanley,Baylor Fox-Kemper,Baylor Fox-Kemper,Luke Van Roekel,Luke Van Roekel,Peter P. Sullivan,William G. Large,Andrew Brown,Adrian Hines,Daley Calvert,Anna Rutgersson,Heidi Pettersson,Jean-Raymond Bidlot,Peter A. E. M. Janssen,Jeff A. Polton +17 more
TL;DR: Belcher et al. as mentioned in this paper showed that current parameterizations of this turbulent mixing lead to systematic and substantial errors in the depth of the ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL) in global climate models, which then leads to biases in sea surface temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Simulations of Trade Wind Cumuli under a Strong Inversion
Bjorn Stevens,Andrew S. Ackerman,Bruce A. Albrecht,Andrew Brown,Andreas Chlond,Joan Cuxart,Peter G. Duynkerke,David C. Lewellen,M. K. Macvean,Roel Neggers,Enrique Sánchez,A. Pier Siebesma,David E. Stevens +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the fifth intercomparison of the Global Water and Energy Experiment Cloud System Studies Working Group 1 to better understand the dynamics of trade wind cumuli capped by a strong inversion.
