Journal ArticleDOI
Synthesis, X-ray crystal structures and biomimetic and anticancer activities of novel copper(II)benzoate complexes incorporating 2-(4'-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (thiabendazole), 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole and 1,10-phenanthroline as chelating nitrogen donor ligands.
Michael Devereux,Denis O Shea,Andrew Kellett,Andrew Kellett,Malachy McCann,Maureen Walsh,Denise A. Egan,Carol Deegan,Kinga Kędziora,Georgina M. Rosair,Helge Müller-Bunz +10 more
TL;DR: The catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of the four complexes along with those of the known phenanthroline complexes were investigated and the structural results for 4 represent a re-examination of this crystallographically known compound for which no hydrogen atom coordinates have been previously reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular methods for assessment of non-covalent metallodrug–DNA interactions
TL;DR: An accessible account of molecular methods to probe inorganic–nucleic acid interactions using copper(II) and platinum(ii) complexes prepared in the authors' laboratories is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Copper(II) Complexes of Salicylic Acid Combining Superoxide Dismutase Mimetic Properties with DNA Binding and Cleaving Capabilities Display Promising Chemotherapeutic Potential with Fast Acting in Vitro Cytotoxicity against Cisplatin Sensitive and Resistant Cancer Cell Lines
Mark J. O'Connor,Andrew Kellett,Malachy McCann,Georgina M. Rosair,Mary McNamara,Orla Howe,Bernadette S. Creaven,Siobhán McClean,Agnieszka Foltyn-Arfa Kia,Denis O'Shea,Michael Devereux +10 more
TL;DR: Complexes 6-8 display rapid micromolar cytotoxicity against cisplatin sensitive and cisPlatin resistant cell lines compared to 1-5, and they exhibit potent in vitro DNA binding and cleavage capabilities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Synthesis, catalase, superoxide dismutase and antitumour activities of copper(II) carboxylate complexes incorporating benzimidazole, 1,10-phenanthroline and bipyridine ligands : X-ray crystal structures of [Cu (BZA )2(bipy ) (H2O ) ], [Cu(SalH)2(BZDH)2] and [Cu (CH3COO )2(5,6 -DMBZDH )2] (SalH2 = salicylic acid; BZAH = benzoic acid; BZDH = benzimidazole and 5,6-DMBZDH = 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole)
Michael Devereux,Denis O'Shea,Mark O'Connor,Helen Grehan,Gavin Connor,Malachy McCann,Georgina M. Rosair,Fiona M. Lyng,Andrew Kellett,Andrew Kellett,Maureen Walsh,Denise A. Egan,Bhumika Thati +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, a series of simple carboxylate complexes, some containing either one chelating {1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy)} or two monodentate {benzimidazole (BZDH) or 5,6-dimethylbenzimaidazoles (5,6]-nitrogen donor ligands, have been prepared and characterised.
Journal ArticleDOI
Copper(II) complexes of coumarin-derived Schiff bases and their anti- Candida activity
Bernadette S. Creaven,Michael Devereux,Dariusz Karcz,Andrew Kellett,Malachy McCann,Andy Noble,Maureen Walsh +6 more
TL;DR: A number of the ligands and complexes exhibited anti-Candida activity comparable to that of the commercially available antifungal drugs, ketoconazole and Amphotericin B.
