The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics

There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. One of the reasons, among others, is that the various basic items of information it offers may be helpful in new tests, either physical or chemical, which are continuously being published. We report a study of self-assembled beta-pleated sheets in B. mori silk fibroin films using thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. B. mori silk fibroin may stand as an exemplar of fibrous proteins containing crystalline beta-sheets. Materials were prepared from concentrated solutions (2−5 wt % fibroin in water) and then dried to achieve a less ordered state without beta-sheets. Crystallization of beta-pleated sheets was effected either by heating the films above the glass transition temperature (Tg) and holding isothermally or by exposure to methanol. The fractions of secondary structural components including random coils, alpha-helices, beta-pleated sheets, turns, and side chains were evaluated using Fourier self-deconvolution (FSD) of the infrared absorbance spectra. The silk fibroin films were studied thermally using temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) to obtain the reversing heat capacity. Determining Beta Sheet Crystallinity in Fibrous Proteins by Thermal Analysis and Infrared Spectroscopy

A simple, sensitive, and selective spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of trace amounts of chromium(VI) in various samples. The method is based on oxidation of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) by chromium in an acidic medium and coupling with β-naphthol to give a red-colored dye, having an absorbance maximum at 663 nm, and/or coupling with α-naphthol to give a violet-colored dye, having an absorbance maximum at 503 nm. The method obeys Beer's law in the concentration range 0.02–4.0µg mL−1 and 0.05–9.0 µg mL−1, respectively. The optimum reaction conditions and other important analytical parameters were established. Interference caused by various nontarget ions was also investigated. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of chromium(VI) in environmental, pharmaceutical, and steel samples. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using the student's t and F -tests.

Facile and Sensitive Spectrophotometric Determination of Chromium

Normal 0 The title compound, N-Hydroxy-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-imine[C 10 H 11 NO], was synthesized by reacting benzylidene acetone with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the presence of base. The structure of the compound was characterized by single crystal XRD data. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbc2 1 with unit-cell parameters: a= 5.591(6)A, b=22.019(3)A, c = 14.742(2) A, β = 90.0o, Z = 4. The crystal structure has been elucidated by Direct methods and refined to a final R -value of 0.056 for 1535 observed reflections. In the crystal molecules are linked by two N-H...N intermolecular h -bonds forming dimer. Molecules in the unit cell are packed together to form well defined layers.

Structure of n-hydroxy-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-imine

In the title compound, C9H12N2O, the dihedral angle between the benzene ring and the mean plane of the acetohydrazide group is 88.2 (7)°. In the crystal, N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and weak C—H⋯O inter­actions link the mol­ecules into infinite ribbons along [001].
