The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics

There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. One of the reasons, among others, is that the various basic items of information it offers may be helpful in new tests, either physical or chemical, which are continuously being published. We report a study of self-assembled beta-pleated sheets in B. mori silk fibroin films using thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. B. mori silk fibroin may stand as an exemplar of fibrous proteins containing crystalline beta-sheets. Materials were prepared from concentrated solutions (2−5 wt % fibroin in water) and then dried to achieve a less ordered state without beta-sheets. Crystallization of beta-pleated sheets was effected either by heating the films above the glass transition temperature (Tg) and holding isothermally or by exposure to methanol. The fractions of secondary structural components including random coils, alpha-helices, beta-pleated sheets, turns, and side chains were evaluated using Fourier self-deconvolution (FSD) of the infrared absorbance spectra. The silk fibroin films were studied thermally using temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) to obtain the reversing heat capacity. The synthesis of metal nanoparticles by eco-friendly procedures is a need of nanotechnology today. One such important approach which shows enormous potential is based on the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using silk fibroin (SF) extracted from Bombyx mori silk. The UV-visible absorption spectra confirmed the reduction of gold ions to gold nanoparticles by showing characteristic surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) in the wavelength range λ = 530-545 nm. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement study suggests the synthesized metal gold nanoparticles are FCC crystal structure. Further, the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the formed AuNPs are spherical, rod, hexagonal and triangle in shapes.

Synthesis and characterization of gold nanopaticles

In the title compound, C33H24F2O3, the central benzene ring makes dihedral angles of 44.71 (10), 47.80 (10) and 63.68 (9)° with the two fluoro-substituted benzene rings and the naphthalene ring system, respectively. In the crystal, mol­ecules are connected via inter­molecular C—H⋯F and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the crystal structure is stabilized by weak C—H⋯π and π–π inter­actions [centroid–centroid distance = 3.6816 (13) A].

(E)-1-(4,4''-Difluoro-5'-meth-oxy-1,1':3',1''-terphenyl-4'-yl)-3-(6-meth-oxy-naphthalen-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one.

In the title compound, C31H20F4N4, the pyrazole ring adopts an envelope conformation and forms a dihedral angle of 9.91 (6)° with the adjacent pyrimidine ring. The pyrimidine ring forms dihedral angles of 9.23 (6) and 2.16 (5)° with its adjacent fluoro-substituted benzene rings, whereas these angles are 88.22 (6) and 9.66 (6)° for the pyrazole ring and its adjacent benzene rings. In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked by C—H⋯F hydrogen bonds into ribbons along [01-1]. The crystal packing is further stabilized by C—H⋯π and by π–π inter­actions, with centroid–centroid distances of 3.7428 (7) and 3.7630 (6) A.
