Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures in Antenna Engineering

This article presents a historical review of the research carried out on dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) over the last three decades. Major research activities in each decade are highlighted. The current state of the art of dielectric-resonator-antenna technology is then reviewed. The achievable performance of dielectric resonator antennas designed for compactness, wide impedance bandwidth, low profiles, circular polarization, or high gain are illustrated. The latest developments in dielectric-resonator-antenna arrays and fabrication techniques are also examined.

Dielectric Resonator Antennas: A Historical Review and the Current State of the Art

By using a coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed with a widened tuning stub, a square slot antenna for broadband operation is presented. Experimental results show that the impedance matching for the proposed antenna strongly depends on the location of the tuning stub in the square slot, and the impedance bandwidth is mainly determined by the width and length of the tuning stub. By properly choosing the location and the size of the tuning stub, a wide impedance bandwidth of 60% can be obtained, which is about 1.9 times that of a conventional CPW-fed square slot antenna with a simple tuning stub. Details of the experimental results are presented and discussed.

RF MEMS and their applications

A novel broadband stacked E-shaped patch antenna is proposed in this paper. The proposed antenna has an input impedance bandwidth of about 38.41%, better than the conventional E-shaped microstrip patch antenna, which has an input impedance bandwidth of 33.8%. Through the use of the washer on the probe of the stacked patch antenna, the input impedance bandwidth is improved further to 44.9%. The radiation patterns are found to be relatively constant throughout the whole band. Comparisons of these antennas are presented in this paper.

Novel design of broad-band stacked patch antenna

A compact planar ultra-wideband ring monopole antenna with a band-notch feature is presented. The band-notch characteristic is achieved by embedding a quarter-wavelength tuning stub in the circular ring monopole. The notched band is controllable by adjusting the length of the tuning stub. The measured antenna radiation patterns show good omnidirectional performance across the operation bandwidth. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Band-notched ultra-wideband ring-monopole antenna

A novel bow-tie slot antenna fed by CPW is investigated. It is designed to work on a thick substrate (h=62 mil) with a high dielectric constant (er=10.1). Two metal stubs are introduced at the center of the bow-tie slot antenna to control the impedance matching and the cross-polarization level. As a result, no balun network is required. A parametric study based on a numerical spectral domain is performed. A bandwidth of more than 40% is achieved, and the experimental results are presented. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Broadband CPW-fed wide slot antenna

A novel wideband hybrid dielectric resonator antenna structure comprises a rectangular dielectric resonator (DR) and a coplanar waveguide (CPW) inductive slot is proposed. In this configuration, the CPW inductive slot simultaneously acts as an effective radiator and the feeding structure of the DR. Dual resonances of the two radiators are merged to extend the antenna's bandwidth. A parametric study is performed to optimize the antenna performance and a prototype for 5-GHz WLAN application has been built and tested.

A compact wideband hybrid dielectric resonator antenna

This paper investigates the design and implementation of millimeter-wave narrow-bandpass filters in a standard 0.18- m CMOS technology. Filters with a measured 10% 3-dB bandwidth at 60 and 77 GHz are realized in a thin-film microstrip structure by using the lowest metallization layer as a ground plane. The impact of dissipation losses of the filters is also examined. It is found that the metallization losses in the coupled-line filter as well as the ground plane are the main reasons for the insertion loss.
