TL;DR: Bedaquiline-containing regimens achieved high conversion and success rates under different nonexperimental conditions, and is safe and effective in treating MDR- and XDR-TB patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term outcomes of patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in South Africa: a cohort study
Elize Pietersen,Elisa Ignatius,Elizabeth M. Streicher,Barbara Lazaro Mastrapa,Xavier Padanilam,Anil Pooran,Motasim Badri,Motasim Badri,Maia Lesosky,Paul D. van Helden,Frederick A. Sirgel,Robin M. Warren,Keertan Dheda +12 more
TL;DR: In South Africa, substantial numbers of patients with XDR tuberculosis who have failed treatment and have positive sputum cultures are being discharged from hospital and are likely to transmit disease into the wider community.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcomes, infectiousness, and transmission dynamics of patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis and home-discharged patients with programmatically incurable tuberculosis: a prospective cohort study
Keertan Dheda,Jason Limberis,Elize Pietersen,Jody Phelan,Aliasgar Esmail,Maia Lesosky,Kevin P. Fennelly,Julian te Riele,Barbara Lazaro Mastrapa,Elizabeth M. Streicher,Tania Dolby,Abdallah M. TL;DR: More than half of the patients with programmatically incurable tuberculosis were discharged into the community where they remained for an average of 16 months, were at risk of expectorating infectious cough aerosols, and posed a threat of transmission of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcomes of patients with drug-resistant-tuberculosis treated with bedaquiline-containing regimens and undergoing adjunctive surgery.
Sergey Borisov,Lia D'Ambrosio,Rosella Centis,Simon Tiberi,Keertan Dheda,Jan-Willem C. TL;DR: Treatment outcomes and complications in a cohort of drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis cases treated with bedaquiline-containing regimens undergoing surgery suggest that bedaquilline and surgery can be safely and effectively combined in selected cases with a specific indication.
Journal ArticleDOI
High frequency of resistance, lack of clinical benefit, and poor outcomes in capreomycin treated South African patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Elize Pietersen,Jonny Peter,Elizabeth M. Streicher,F. A. Sirgel,Neesha Rockwood,Barbara Lazaro Mastrapa,Julian te Riele,Malika Davids,Paul D. van Helden,Robin M. Warren,Keertan Dheda +10 more
TL;DR: In South Africa the frequency of capreomycin conferring mutations was extremely high in XDR-TB isolates, and in those with capromycin resistance there appeared to be no therapeutic benefit of using capREomycin.
