TL;DR: If the dearth of genomics research involving Africans persists, the potential health and economic benefits emanating from genomic science may elude an entire continent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term outcomes of patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in South Africa: a cohort study
Elize Pietersen,Elisa Ignatius,Elizabeth M. Streicher,Barbara Lazaro Mastrapa,Xavier Padanilam,Anil Pooran,Motasim Badri,Motasim Badri,Maia Lesosky,Paul D. van Helden,Frederick A. Sirgel,Robin M. Warren,Keertan Dheda +12 more
TL;DR: In South Africa, substantial numbers of patients with XDR tuberculosis who have failed treatment and have positive sputum cultures are being discharged from hospital and are likely to transmit disease into the wider community.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect on mortality of point-of-care, urine-based lipoarabinomannan testing to guide tuberculosis treatment initiation in HIV-positive hospital inpatients: a pragmatic, parallel-group, multicountry, open-label, randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: The implementation of LAM testing is likely to offer the greatest benefit in hospitals where diagnostic resources are most scarce and where patients present with severe illness, advanced immunosuppression, and an inability to self-expectorate sputum.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vitamin D and Reduced Risk of Breast Cancer: A Population-Based Case-Control Study
TL;DR: There is strong evidence to support the hypothesis that vitamin D could help prevent breast cancer, and the results suggest that exposure earlier in life, particularly during breast development, maybe most relevant.
