Journal ArticleDOI
Modified Use of Team-Based Learning for Effective Delivery of Medical Gross Anatomy and Embryology.
TL;DR: It is found that a TBL approach in teaching anatomy allowed us to create an active learning environment that helped to improve students' performances, and based on the experience, other preclinical courses are now piloting TBL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of one year of supplementation with zinc and other micronutrients on cellular immunity in the elderly.
John D. Bogden,James M. Oleske,Marvin A. Lavenhar,Elizabeth M. Munves,Francis W. Kemp,K.S. Bruening,K. Holding,Thomas N. Denny,Michael A. Guarino,Bart Holland +9 more
TL;DR: Although plasma Zn increased significantly in the 100 mg Zn treatment group, concentrations of Zn in erythrocytes, mononuclear cells, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and platelets were not significantly increased by zinc supplementation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Expression of human immunodeficiency virus in cerebrospinal fluid of children with progressive encephalopathy
Leon G. Epstein,Leon G. Epstein,Jaap Goudsmit,Deborah A. Paul,Susan H. Morrison,Susan H. Morrison,Edward M. Connor,Edward M. Connor,James M. Oleske,James M. Oleske,Bart Holland +10 more
TL;DR: Findings strongly implicate HIV as the causative agent of PE in these children and the assay for HIV antigen in the CSF may be of value in determining the prognosis of children with HIV infection and for evaluating the efficacy of therapeutic agents against this retrovirus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct Cerebrospinal Fluid Proteomes Differentiate Post-Treatment Lyme Disease from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Steven E. Schutzer,Thomas E. Angel,Tao Liu,Athena A. Schepmoes,Therese R. W. Clauss,Joshua N. Adkins,David G. Camp,Bart Holland,Jonas Bergquist,Patricia K. Coyle,Richard D. Smith,Brian A. Fallon,Benjamin H. Natelson,Benjamin H. Natelson +13 more
TL;DR: Each condition has a number of CSF proteins that can be useful in providing candidates for future validation studies and insights on the respective mechanisms of pathogenesis, and can lead to novel diagnostics and therapeutic interventions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interferon-α generation and immune reconstitution during antiretroviral therapy for human immunodeficiency virus infection
Frederick P. Siegal,Patricia Fitzgerald-Bocarsly,Bart Holland,Michael Shodell,Michael Shodell +4 more
TL;DR: Recovery of IFN-alpha generation may be an early marker of immune reconstitution in AIDS and Rapidly responding IFn-alpha generating cells appear to participate in resistance to opportunistic intracellular infection.
