Sanciangco,Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Sheila G. Vergara,Michelle Waycott,Joseph C. Zieman +25 more
TL;DR: For the first time, the probability of extinction is determined for the world’s seagrass species under the Categories and Criteria of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
Journal ArticleDOI
The fundamental role of ecological feedback mechanisms for the adaptive management of seagrass ecosystems - a review.
Paul S. Maxwell,Johan S. Eklöf,Marieke M. van Katwijk,Katherine R. O'Brien,Maricela de la Torre-Castro,Christoffer Boström,Tjeerd J. Bouma,Dorte Krause-Jensen,Richard K. F. Unsworth,Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Tjisse van der Heide +11 more
TL;DR: Modelling the interactions among two distinct above‐ and belowground feedbacks is taken to demonstrate that interacting feedbacks are likely to be important for ecosystem resilience, and proposes a five‐step adaptive management plan to address feedback dynamics for effective conservation and restoration strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Severe impacts of brown tides caused by Sargassum spp. on near-shore Caribbean seagrass communities.
Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Héctor A. Hernández Arana,Rosa E. Rodríguez-Martínez,Julio Espinoza-Avalos,Hazel M. Canizales-Flores,Carlos E. González-Godoy,M. Guadalupe Barba-Santos,Alejandro Vega-Zepeda,Ligia Collado-Vides +8 more
TL;DR: Near-shore seagrass meadows dominated by Thalassia testudinum were replaced by a community dominated by calcareous rhizophytic algae and drifting algae and/or epiphytes, resulting in 61.6-99.5% loss of below-ground biomass.
Journal ArticleDOI

Unsworth,Mike van Keulen,Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Mengqiu Wang,Michelle Waycott,Lauren V. Weatherdon,Thomas Wernberg,Siti Maryam Yaakub +51 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a consensus assessment and recommendations on the current state of and opportunities for advancing global marine macrophyte observations, integrating contributions from a community of researchers with broad geographic and disciplinary expertise.
Journal ArticleDOI
Massive Influx of Pelagic Sargassum spp. on the Coasts of the Mexican Caribbean 2014–2020: Challenges and Opportunities
Valeria Chávez,Abigail Uribe-Martínez,Eduardo Cuevas,Rosa E. Rodríguez-Martínez,Brigitta I. van Tussenbroek,Vanessa Francisco,Miriam Estevez,Lourdes B. Celis,L. Verónica Monroy-Velázquez,Rosa Leal-Bautista,Lorenzo Alvarez-Filip,Marta García-Sánchez,Luis Masia,Rodolfo Silva +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used Landsat 8 imagery (from 2016 to mid-2020) to record the coverage of sargasso in the sea off the Mexican Caribbean coastline, with a maximum reported in September 2018.
