Journal ArticleDOI
Flow cytometric analysis of marine bacteria with hoechst 33342.
TL;DR: Bacterial populations were easier to distinguish from background fluorescence when stained with HO342 than whenstained with DAPI, because HO342 has a higher relative fluorescence quantum yield.
Journal ArticleDOI
Feeding selection of heterotrophic marine nanoflagellates based on the surface hydrophobicity of their picoplankton prey
TL;DR: The rate at which picoplankton cells are cleared from suspension by nanoflagellates could vary by as much as twofold due solely to natural variation in cell surface hydrophobicity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Time-dependency of microzooplankton grazing and phytoplankton growth in the subarctic Pacific
TL;DR: In this paper, the role of micro-zooplankton in controlling phytoplankton stocks in the subarctic Pacific was investigated on Super Program cruises.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prey-size dependency of grazing by free-living marine flagellates
Bruce C. Monger,Landry +1 more
TL;DR: Evidence from 7 experiments indicated that flagellate feeding is only weakly size-selective; that is, clearance rate varies, roughly, in direct proportion to prey radius, providing preliminary support of a prey capture model that is based entirely on the interaction of hydrodynamic forces and surface forces arising between freeLiving marine flagella and picoplankton-size prey.
Journal ArticleDOI
Remote climate forcing of decadal‐scale regime shifts in Northwest Atlantic shelf ecosystems
Charles H. Greene,Erin Meyer-Gutbrod,Bruce C. Monger,Louise P. McGarry,Andrew J. Pershing,Andrew J. Pershing,Igor M. Belkin,Paula S. Fratantoni,David G. Mountain,Robert S. Pickart,Andrey Proshutinsky,Rubao Ji,James J. Bisagni,Sirpa Häkkinen,Dale B. Haidvogel,Jia Wang,Erica J. H. Head,Peter C. Smith,Philip C. Reid,Alessandra Conversi,Alessandra Conversi +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review and synthesize results from process-oriented field studies and retrospective analyses of time-series data to document the linkages between climate, ocean circulation, and ecosystem dynamics.
