Plasmons in strongly coupled metallic nanostructures.

Coinage metals, such as Au, Ag, and Cu, have been important materials throughout history.1 While in ancient cultures they were admired primarily for their ability to reflect light, their applications have become far more sophisticated with our increased understanding and control of the atomic world. Today, these metals are widely used in electronics, catalysis, and as structural materials, but when they are fashioned into structures with nanometer-sized dimensions, they also become enablers for a completely different set of applications that involve light. These new applications go far beyond merely reflecting light, and have renewed our interest in maneuvering the interactions between metals and light in a field known as plasmonics.2–6

In plasmonics, the metal nanostructures can serve as antennas to convert light into localized electric fields (E-fields) or as waveguides to route light to desired locations with nanometer precision. These applications are made possible through a strong interaction between incident light and free electrons in the nanostructures. With a tight control over the nanostructures in terms of size and shape, light can be effectively manipulated and controlled with unprecedented accuracy.3,7 While many new technologies stand to be realized from plasmonics, with notable examples including superlenses,8 invisible cloaks,9 and quantum computing,10,11 conventional technologies like microprocessors and photovoltaic devices could also be made significantly faster and more efficient with the integration of plasmonic nanostructures.12–15 Of the metals, Ag has probably played the most important role in the development of plasmonics, and its unique properties make it well-suited for most of the next-generation plasmonic technologies.16–18

1.1. What is Plasmonics?
Plasmonics is related to the localization, guiding, and manipulation of electromagnetic waves beyond the diffraction limit and down to the nanometer length scale.4,6 The key component of plasmonics is a metal, because it supports surface plasmon polariton modes (indicated as surface plasmons or SPs throughout this review), which are electromagnetic waves coupled to the collective oscillations of free electrons in the metal.

While there are a rich variety of plasmonic metal nanostructures, they can be differentiated based on the plasmonic modes they support: localized surface plasmons (LSPs) or propagating surface plasmons (PSPs).5,19 In LSPs, the time-varying electric field associated with the light (Eo) exerts a force on the gas of negatively charged electrons in the conduction band of the metal and drives them to oscillate collectively. At a certain excitation frequency (w), this oscillation will be in resonance with the incident light, resulting in a strong oscillation of the surface electrons, commonly known as a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode.20 This phenomenon is illustrated in Figure 1A. Structures that support LSPRs experience a uniform Eo when excited by light as their dimensions are much smaller than the wavelength of the light.

In contrast, PSPs are supported by structures that have at least one dimension that approaches the excitation wavelength, as shown in Figure 1B.4 In this case, the Eo is not uniform across the structure and other effects must be considered. In such a structure, like a nanowire for example, SPs propagate back and forth between the ends of the structure. This can be described as a Fabry-Perot resonator with resonance condition l=nλsp, where l is the length of the nanowire, n is an integer, and λsp is the wavelength of the PSP mode.21,22 Reflection from the ends of the structure must also be considered, which can change the phase and resonant length. Propagation lengths can be in the tens of micrometers (for nanowires) and the PSP waves can be manipulated by controlling the geometrical parameters of the structure.23

Controlling the synthesis and assembly of silver nanostructures for plasmonic applications

Just as nanoparticles display properties that differ from those of bulk samples of the same material, ensembles of nanoparticles can have collective properties that are different to those displayed by individual nanoparticles and bulk samples. Self-assembly has emerged as a powerful technique for controlling the structure and properties of ensembles of inorganic nanoparticles. Here we review different strategies for nanoparticle self-assembly, the properties of self-assembled structures of nanoparticles, and potential applications of such structures. Many of these properties and possible applications rely on our ability to control the interactions between the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of the individual nanoparticles. Self-assembly is a powerful technique for controlling the structure and properties of ensembles of inorganic nanoparticles. This article reviews the properties and potential applications of self-assembled structures made from nanoparticles.

Properties and emerging applications of self-assembled structures made from inorganic nanoparticles

Wide-band-gap GaN and Ga-rich InGaN alloys, with energy gaps covering the blue and near-ultraviolet parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, are one group of the dominant materials for solid state lighting and lasing technologies and consequently, have been studied very well. Much less effort has been devoted to InN and In-rich InGaN alloys. A major breakthrough in 2002, stemming from much improved quality of InN films grown using molecular beam epitaxy, resulted in the bandgap of InN being revised from 1.9 eV to a much narrower value of 0.64 eV. This finding triggered a worldwide research thrust into the area of narrow-band-gap group-III nitrides. The low value of the InN bandgap provides a basis for a consistent description of the electronic structure of InGaN and InAlN alloys with all compositions. It extends the fundamental bandgap of the group III-nitride alloy system over a wider spectral region, ranging from the near infrared at ∼1.9 μm (0.64 eV for InN) to the ultraviolet at ∼0.36 μm (3.4 eV for GaN...

When group-III nitrides go infrared: New properties and perspectives

Metallic nanostructures attract much interest as an efficient media for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Significant progress has been made on the synthesis of metal nanoparticles with various shapes, composition, and controlled plasmonic properties, all critical for an efficient SERS response. For practical applications, efficient strategies of assembling metal nanoparticles into organized nanostructures are paramount for the fabrication of reproducible, stable, and highly active SERS substrates. Recent progress in the synthesis of novel plasmonic nanoparticles, fabrication of highly ordered one-, two-, and three-dimensional SERS substrates, and some applications of corresponding SERS effects are discussed.

Nanostructured Surfaces and Assemblies as SERS Media

We report on the self-assembly of large-area, highly ordered 2D superlattices of alkanethiolate-stabilized gold nanoparticles (∼10.5 nm in core diameter) onto quartz substrates with varying lattice constants, which can be controlled by the alkyl chain lengths, ranging from C12 (1-dodecanethiolate), C14 (1-tetradecanethiolate), C16 (1-hexadecanethiolate), to C18 (1-octadecanethiolate). These 2D nanoparticle superlattices exhibit strong collective surface plasmon resonance that is tunable via the near-field coupling of adjacent nanoparticles. The approach presented here provides a unique and viable means of building artificial “plasmonic crystals” with precisely designed optical properties, which can be useful for the emerging fields of plasmonics, such as subwavelength integrated optics.

Tunable plasmonic response from alkanethiolate-stabilized gold nanoparticle superlattices: evidence of near-field coupling.

We present a generic and efficient chemical patterning method based on local plasma-induced conversion of surface functional groups on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Here, spatially controlled plasma exposure is realized by elastomeric poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) contact masks or channel stamps with feature sizes ranging from nanometer, micrometer, to centimeter. This chemical conversion method has been comprehensively characterized by a set of techniques, including contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). In particular, XPS and SPEM can be used to distinguish regions of different surface functionalities and elucidate the mechanism of plasma-induced chemical conversion. In the case of an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) monolayer, we show that exposure to low-power air plasma causes hydroxylation and oxidation of the methyl terminal group on an OTS-covered Si surface and generates polar functional groups such as hydroxyl, aldehylde, and carboxyl groups, which can allow subsequent grafting of dissimilar SAMs and adsorption of colloid nanoparticles onto the patterned areas with an achievable resolution down to the 50 nm range.

Multilength-Scale Chemical Patterning of Self-Assembled Monolayers by Spatially Controlled Plasma Exposure: Nanometer to Centimeter Range

A new approach is introduced for electrostatically guided adsorption of colloidal nanoparticles onto a patterned self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with feature sizes ranging from nm to mm. Patterning of the adsorption templates is realized by electric-field-induced anodic oxidation of aminosilane SAM using an ink-free method. In this versatile method, both “positive” and “negative” type pattern transfers are possible. The chemically converted patterns are induced by localized electrical fields on the microcontacted areas, and the patterning resolution is insensitive to the diffusion of oxidizing agents because of the self-limiting oxidation kinetics, thereby enabling high-resolution, large-scale parallel patterning.

Electrostatic assembly of gold colloidal nanoparticles on organosilane monolayers patterned by microcontact electrochemical conversion

We demonstrate that indium nitride (InN) can be used as ion selective electrode (ISE) for anion concentration measurements. The InN ISE reveals remarkable selectivity, response time, signal stability, and repeatability for chlorine and hydroxyl ions. The selective interaction of Lewis bases in solutions with the N-polarity InN epitaxial layer grown on silicon is confirmed by potentiometric responses. The Helmholtz potential of the InN ISE, generated at the InN/solution interface, satisfies the Nernst equation. The observation of anion attraction to the InN surface further demonstrates the existence of donor-type surface states on InN.

InN-based anion selective sensors in aqueous solutions

The band alignment between copper interconnects and their low-k interlayer dielectrics is critical to understanding the fundamental mechanisms involved in electrical leakage in low-k/Cu interconnects. In this work, vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) photoemission spectroscopy is utilized to determine the potential of the Schottky barrier present at low-k a-SiOC:H/Cu interfaces. By examining the photoemission spectra before and after VUV exposure of a low-k a-SiOC:H (k = 3.3) thin film fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition on a polished Cu substrate, it was found that photons with energies of 4.9 eV or greater can deplete accumulated charge in a-SiOC:H films, while VUV photons with energies of 4.7 eV or less, did not have this effect. These critical values were identified to relate the electric potential of the interface barrier between the a-SiOC:H and the Cu layers. Using this method, the Schottky barrier at the low-k a-SiOC:H (k = 3.3)/Cu interface was determined to be 4.8 ± 0.1 eV.
