Uncertainty in predictions of the climate response to rising levels of greenhouse gases.
David A. Stainforth,T. Aina,C. Christensen,Matthew Collins,N. Faull,David J. Frame,J. A. Kettleborough,Simon R. Knight,Andrew J. Martin,James M. Murphy,C. Piani,David M. H. Sexton,Leonard A. Smith,Robert A. Spicer,Alan J. Thorpe,Myles R. Allen +15 more
TL;DR: Results from the ‘climateprediction.net’ experiment are presented, the first multi-thousand-member grand ensemble of simulations using a general circulation model and thereby explicitly resolving regional details, finding model versions as realistic as other state-of-the-art climate models but with climate sensitivities ranging from less than 2 K to more than 11’K.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Quake-Catcher Network: Citizen Science Expanding Seismic Horizons
TL;DR: The Quake-Catcher Network (QCN) as discussed by the authors is a seismic network that implements distributed/volunteer computing with the potential to provide critical earthquake information by filling in the gaps between traditional seismic stations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Broad range of 2050 warming from an observationally constrained large climate model ensemble
Daniel J. Rowlands,Daniel J. Rowlands,David J. Frame,Duncan Ackerley,Duncan Ackerley,T. Aina,Ben B. B. Booth,C. Christensen,Matthew Collins,N. Faull,Chris E. Forest,Benjamin S. Grandey,Edward Gryspeerdt,Eleanor J. Highwood,William Ingram,William Ingram,Sylvia Knight,Ana Lopez,Ana Lopez,Neil Massey,Frances McNamara,Nicolai Meinshausen,C. Piani,Suzanne M. Rosier,Suzanne M. Rosier,Benjamin M. Sanderson,Leonard A. Smith,Leonard A. Smith,Dáithí A. Stone,Milo Thurston,K. Yamazaki,Y Hiro Yamazaki,Y Hiro Yamazaki,Myles R. Allen +33 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present results from a multi-thousand-member perturbed-physics ensemble of transient coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model simulations and conclude that warming by the middle of the twenty-first century that is stronger than earlier estimates is consistent with recent observed temperature changes and a mid-range "no mitigation" scenario for greenhouse-gas emissions.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
Designing a runtime system for volunteer computing
TL;DR: The problems in designing a runtime system having features and properties desired by volunteers, and how these problems are solved in BOINC are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of parameter, software, and hardware variation with large-scale behavior across 57,000 climate models
Christopher Knight,Sylvia Knight,Neil Massey,T. Aina,C. Christensen,Dave Frame,Jamie Kettleborough,Andrew P. Martin,Stephen Pascoe,Ben Sanderson,David A. Stainforth,Myles R. Allen +11 more
TL;DR: An unprecedentedly large ensemble of >57,000 climate model runs in which 10 parameters, initial conditions, hardware, and software used to run the model all have been varied is presented.
