Journal ArticleDOI
Zero or not? Causes and consequences of zero-flow stream gage readings.
Margaret A. Zimmer,K. E. Kaiser,Joanna R. Blaszczak,Samuel C. Zipper,John C. Hammond,Ken M. Fritz,Katie H. Costigan,Jacob D. Hosen,Sarah E. Godsey,George H. Allen,Stephanie K. Kampf,Ryan M. Burrows,Corey A. Krabbenhoft,Walter K. Dodds,Rebecca L. Hale,Julian D. Olden,Margaret Shanafield,Amanda G. DelVecchia,Adam S. Ward,Meryl C. Mims,Thibault Datry,Michael T. Bogan,Kate S. Boersma,Michelle H. Busch,C. Nathan Jones,Amy J. Burgin,Daniel C. Allen +26 more
TL;DR: Several causes of zero-flow gage readings are described: frozen surface water, flow reversals, instrument error, and natural or human-driven upstream source losses or bypass flow and their implications for reach- and watershed-scale dynamics are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Floodplain biogeochemical processing of floodwaters in the Atchafalaya River Basin during the Mississippi River flood of 2011
TL;DR: The 2011 flood in the Lower Mississippi resulted in the second highest recorded river flow diverted into the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB), resulting in high hydrologic connectivity with up to 50% of Atchaelay River water moving off channel.
Journal ArticleDOI
What's in a Name? Patterns, Trends, and Suggestions for Defining Non-Perennial Rivers and Streams.
Michelle H. Busch,Katie H. Costigan,Ken M. Fritz,Thibault Datry,Corey A. Krabbenhoft,John C. Hammond,Margaret A. Zimmer,Julian D. Olden,Ryan M. Burrows,Ryan M. Burrows,Walter K. Dodds,Kate S. Boersma,Margaret Shanafield,Stephanie K. Kampf,Meryl C. Mims,Michael T. Bogan,Adam S. Ward,Mariana Perez Rocha,Sarah E. Godsey,George H. Allen,Joanna R. Blaszczak,C. Nathan Jones,Daniel C. Allen +22 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that multiple epithets used in non-perennial river research are redundant, which can facilitate more effective communication among research fields and provide clear guidelines for writing regulatory documents.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatial Patterns and Drivers of Nonperennial Flow Regimes in the Contiguous United States
John C. Hammond,Margaret A. Zimmer,Margaret Shanafield,K. E. Kaiser,Sarah E. Godsey,Meryl C. Mims,Samuel C. Zipper,Ryan M. Burrows,Stephanie K. Kampf,Walter K. Dodds,C. Nathan Jones,Corey A. Krabbenhoft,Kate S. Boersma,Thibault Datry,Julian D. Olden,George H. Allen,A. N. Price,Katie H. Costigan,Rebecca L. Hale,Adam S. Ward,Daniel C. Allen +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to solve the problem of water scarcity in the United States by using a water-conserving water supply system, based on the KWIR algorithm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of Road Salt on Drinking Water Quality and Infrastructure Corrosion in Private Wells
Kelsey J. Pieper,Min Tang,C. Nathan Jones,Stephanie Weiss,Andrew Greene,Hisyam Mohsin,Jeffrey Parks,Marc Edwards +7 more
TL;DR: The potential extent of chloride concentrations in groundwater and the resulting impact on private wells in New York and the need to include the damage to public and privately owned drinking water infrastructure in future discussion of road salt management is highlighted.
