Journal ArticleDOI
Erythropoietin crosses the blood-brain barrier to protect against experimental brain injury.
Michael Brines,Pietro Ghezzi,Sonja Keenan,Davide Agnello,Nihal C. de Lanerolle,Carla Cerami,Loretta M. Itri,Anthony Cerami +7 more
TL;DR: R-Hu-EPO also ameliorates the extent of concussive brain injury, the immune damage in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, and the toxicity of kainate, and clinical trials evaluating systemically administered r-Hu -EPO as a general neuroprotective treatment are warranted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tobacco Smoke is a Source of Toxic Reactive Glycation Products
Carla Cerami,Hank Founds,Iain D. Nicholl,Tomoko Mitsuhashi,Donna Giordano,Sonya VanPatten,Annette Lee,Yousef Al-Abed,Helen Vlassara,Richard Bucala,Anthony Cerami +10 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that increased glycotoxin exposure may contribute to the increased incidence of atherosclerosis and high prevalence of cancer in smokers.
Journal ArticleDOI
The basolateral domain of the hepatocyte plasma membrane bears receptors for the circumsporozoite protein of plasmodium falciparum sporozoites
Carla Cerami,Ute Frevert,Photini Sinnis,Bela Takacs,Pedro Clavijo,Manuel J. Santos,Victor Nussenzweig +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that recombinant Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (CS) binds specifically to regions of the plasma membrane of hepatocytes exposed to circulating blood in the Disse space, providing a rational explanation for the target cell specificity of malaria sporozoites.
Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria circumsporozoite protein binds to heparan sulfate proteoglycans associated with the surface membrane of hepatocytes.
TL;DR: The CS-binding HSPGs are purified and partially characterized and have a molecular weight of 400,000-700,000, are tightly associated with the plasma membrane, and are released from the cell surface by very mild trypsinization, a property which the CS receptors share with the syndecan family of proteoglycans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structural and functional properties of region II-plus of the malaria circumsporozoite protein.
TL;DR: A multiple antigen peptide is synthesized that mimics the hepatocyte-binding ligand of circumsporozoite protein and inhibits both CS binding to HepG2 cells in vitro as well as CS clearance in mice.
