Journal ArticleDOI
Scalable Production and Isolation of Extracellular Vesicles: Available Sources and Lessons from Current Industrial Bioprocesses.
Carolina Paganini,Umberto Capasso Palmiero,Gabriella Pocsfalvi,Nicolas Touzet,Antonella Bongiovanni,Paolo Arosio +5 more
TL;DR: In this review, possible directions toward the scalable production of EVs are discussed, and two strategies are considered: the optimization of upstream unit operations and the exploitation of well‐established and mature technologies already in use in other industrial bioprocesses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nanoalgosomes: Introducing extracellular vesicles produced by microalgae.
Giorgia Adamo,David Fierli,Daniele P. Romancino,Sabrina Picciotto,Maria Elena Barone,Anita Aranyos,Darja Božič,Svenja Morsbach,Samuele Raccosta,Christopher Stanly,Carolina Paganini,Meiyu Gai,Antonella Cusimano,Vincenzo Martorana,Rosina Noto,Rita Carrotta,Fabio Librizzi,Loredana Randazzo,Rachel Parkes,Umberto Capasso Palmiero,Estella Rao,Angela Paterna,Pamela Santonicola,Aleš Iglič,Laura Corcuera,Annamaria Kisslinger,Elia Di Schiavi,Giovanna L. Liguori,Katharina Landfester,Veronika Kralj-Iglič,Paolo Arosio,Gabriella Pocsfalvi,Nicolas Touzet,Mauro Manno,Antonella Bongiovanni +34 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a newly discovered subtype of extracellular vesicles derived from microalgae, which they named nanoalgosomes, and they show that nano-algosome are efficiently taken up by mammalian cell lines, confirming the cross kingdom communication potential of EVs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Isolation of extracellular vesicles from microalgae: towards the production of sustainable and natural nanocarriers of bioactive compounds.
Sabrina Picciotto,Maria Elena Barone,David Fierli,Anita Aranyos,Giorgia Adamo,Darja Božič,Daniele P. Romancino,Christopher Stanly,Rachel Parkes,Svenja Morsbach,Samuele Raccosta,Carolina Paganini,Antonella Cusimano,Vincenzo Martorana,Rosina Noto,Rita Carrotta,Fabio Librizzi,Umberto Capasso Palmiero,Pamela Santonicola,Aleš Iglič,Meiyu Gai,Laura Corcuera,Annamaria Kisslinger,Elia Di Schiavi,Katharina Landfester,Giovanna L. Liguori,Veronika Kralj-Iglič,Paolo Arosio,Gabriella Pocsfalvi,Mauro Manno,Nicolas Touzet,Antonella Bongiovanni +31 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate that microalgae are promising producers of EVs, and they identify seven promising EV-producing strains belonging to distinct lineages, suggesting that the production of EVs in micro algae is an evolutionary conserved trait, and highlight the potential of microalgal EVs as novel biogenic nanovehicles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid Characterization and Quantification of Extracellular Vesicles by Fluorescence-Based Microfluidic Diffusion Sizing
Carolina Paganini,Britta Hettich,Marie R.G. Kopp,Adam Eördögh,Adam Eördögh,Umberto Capasso Palmiero,Giorgia Adamo,Nicolas Touzet,Mauro Manno,Antonella Bongiovanni,Pablo Rivera-Fuentes,Jean-Christophe Leroux,Paolo Arosio +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a microfluidic device is presented that exploits the combination of diffusion sizing and multiwavelength fluorescence detection to simultaneously provide information on EV size, concentration, and composition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Programmable Zwitterionic Droplets as Biomolecular Sorters and Model of Membraneless Organelles.
Umberto Capasso Palmiero,Carolina Paganini,Marie R.G. Kopp,Miriam Linsenmeier,Andreas M. Küffner,Paolo Arosio +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed programmable droplets based on simple coacervation of responsive synthetic polymers that mimic the "stickers-and-spacers" architecture of biological disordered proteins.
