Dispersion study in a street canyon with tree planting by means of wind tunnel and numerical investigations – Evaluation of CFD data with experimental data

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of tree planting with different tree crown porosity was investigated and the results obtained in this work by combining wind tunnel experiments and CFD based simulations suggest ways to obtain quantitative information for assessment, planning and implementation of exposure mitigation using trees in urban street canyons.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of trees on the dispersion of pollutants in an urban street canyon - experimental investigation of the flow and concentration field

TL;DR: In this paper, an idealized model of an urban street canyon with one row of trees arranged along the center axis was performed in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel and the approach flow was directed perpendicular to the street axis, where a line source embedded in the bottom of the street was used to release tracer gas for the simulation of traffic exhaust emissions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Aerodynamic effects of trees on pollutant concentration in street canyons

TL;DR: The investigations carried out in this work allowed us to set up an appropriate CFD modelling methodology for the study of the aerodynamic effects of tree planting in street canyons, and the results obtained can be used by city planners for the design of tree plantings in the urban environment with regard to air quality issues.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of local scale tree-atmosphere interaction on pollutant concentration in idealized street canyons and application to a real urban junction

TL;DR: In this article, the aerodynamic effects of trees on local scale flow and pollutant concentration in idealized street canyon configurations by means of laboratory experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
Journal ArticleDOI

On the impact of trees on dispersion processes of traffic emissions in street canyons

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors performed wind-tunnel studies of dispersion processes of traffic exhaust in urban street canyons with tree planting and tracer gas concentrations using electron capture detection (ECD) and flow fields using laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) were measured.
