Ultrafast X-ray probing of water structure below the homogeneous ice nucleation temperature.
Jonas A. Sellberg,Congcong Huang,Trevor A. McQueen,N. D. Loh,Hartawan Laksmono,Daniel Schlesinger,Raymond G. Sierra,Dennis Nordlund,Christina Y. Hampton,Dmitri Starodub,Daniel P. DePonte,Martin Beye,Changxin Chen,Changxin Chen,Andrew V. Martin,Anton Barty,Kjartan Thor Wikfeldt,Thomas M. Weiss,Chiara Caronna,Jan M. Feldkamp,Lawrie Skinner,M. Marvin Seibert,Marc Messerschmidt,Garth J. Williams,Sébastien Boutet,Lars G. M. Pettersson,Michael J. Bogan,Anders Nilsson +27 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that femtosecond X-ray laser pulses can be used to probe the structure of liquid water in micrometre-sized droplets that have been evaporatively cooled below TH, and experimental evidence is found for the existence of metastable bulk liquid water down to temperatures of kelvin in the previously largely unexplored no man’s land.
Journal ArticleDOI
The X-ray Correlation Spectroscopy instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source
Roberto Alonso-Mori,Chiara Caronna,Matthieu Chollet,Robin Curtis,Daniel S. Damiani,Jim Defever,Yiping Feng,Daniel L. Flath,James M. Glownia,Sooheyong Lee,Henrik T. Lemke,Silke Nelson,Eric Bong,Marcin Sikorski,Sanghoon Song,Venkat Srinivasan,Daniel Stefanescu,Diling Zhu,Aymeric Robert +18 more
TL;DR: A description of the X-ray Correlation Spectroscopy instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source is presented and recent highlights illustrate the coherence properties of the source as well as some recent dynamics measurements and future directions.
Journal ArticleDOI
The “Protein Dynamical Transition” Does Not Require the Protein Polypeptide Chain
TL;DR: It is shown that a rapid increase of hydrogen atoms fluctuations at about 220 K, analogous to the one observed in hydrated myoglobin powders, is also observed in a hydrated amino acids mixture with the chemical composition of myoglobin but lacking the polypeptide chain.
Proceedings ArticleDOI
A single-shot intensity-position monitor for hard x-ray FEL sources
Yiping Feng,Jan M. Feldkamp,David Fritz,Marco Cammarata,Robert Aymeric,Chiara Caronna,Henrik T. Lemke,Diling Zhu,Sooheyong Lee,Sébastien Boutet,Garth J. Williams,Kensuke Tono,Makina Yabashi,Jerome B. Hastings +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, an inline diagnostics device was developed to measure the intrinsic shot-to-shot intensity and position fluctuations of the SASE-based LCLS hard X-ray FEL source.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular origin and hydration dependence of protein anharmonicity: an elastic neutron scattering study
TL;DR: This study shows that methyl group rotations are unaffected by hydration and confirms that the dynamical transition is suppressed in dry samples, and investigates the role of hydration on the anharmonic contributions.
