Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality of HIV-1-infected patients in the first year of antiretroviral therapy: comparison between low-income and high-income countries.
Paula Braitstein,Mwg Brinkhof,François Dabis,Mauro Schechter,Andrew Boulle,Paolo G. Miotti,Robin Wood,Christian Laurent,Eduardo Sprinz,Catherine Seyler,David R. Bangsberg,Eric Balestre,Jonathan A C Sterne,Margaret T May,Matthias Egger +14 more
TL;DR: Patients starting HAART in resource-poor settings have increased mortality rates in the first months on therapy, compared with those in developed countries, and timely diagnosis and assessment of treatment eligibility, coupled with free provision of HAART might reduce this excess mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early loss of HIV-infected patients on potent antiretroviral therapy programmes in lower-income countries
Martin W. G. Brinkhof,François Dabis,Landon Myer,David R. Bangsberg,Andrew Boulle,Denis Nash,Mauro Schechter,Christian Laurent,Olivia Keiser,Margaret T May,Eduardo Sprinz,Matthias Egger,Xavier Anglaret +12 more
TL;DR: Early patient losses were increasingly common when programmes were scaled up and were associated with a fee for service and advanced immunodeficiency at baseline, and measures to maximize ART programme retention are required in resource-poor countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effectiveness and safety of a generic fixed-dose combination of nevirapine, stavudine, and lamivudine in HIV-1-infected adults in Cameroon: open-label multicentre trial
Christian Laurent,Charles Kouanfack,Sinata Koulla-Shiro,Nathalie Nkoué,Anke Bourgeois,Alexandra Calmy,Bernadette Lactuock,Viviane Nzeusseu,Rose Mougnutou,Gilles Peytavin,Florian Liegeois,Eric Nerrienet,Michèle Tardy,Martine Peeters,Isabelle Andrieux-Meyer,Leopold Zekeng,Michel D. Kazatchkine,Eitel Mpoudi-Ngole,Eric Delaporte +18 more
TL;DR: The findings lend support to use and funding of a generic fixed-dose combination of nevirapine, stavudine, and lamivudine as first-line antiretroviral treatment in developing countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Senegalese government's highly active antiretroviral therapy initiative: an 18-month follow-up study.
Christian Laurent,Ndella Diakhaté,Ndeye Fatou Ngom Gueye,Mame Awa Touré,Papa Salif Sow,Mame Awa Faye,Mandoumbé Gueye,Isabelle Lanièce,Coumba Toure Kane,Florian Liegeois,Laurence Vergne,Souleymane Mboup,Salif Badiane,Ibrahima Ndoye,Eric Delaporte +14 more
TL;DR: Clinical and biological results were comparable to those seen in western cohorts, despite differences in the HIV-1 subtype distribution and an advanced disease stage when the treatment was initiated, and shows that HAART is feasible and well tolerated in African patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality and causes of death in adults receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in Senegal: a 7-year cohort study.
Jean-François Etard,Ibrahima Ndiaye,Marion Thierry-Mieg,Ndeye Fatou Ngom Gueye,Pape Mandoumbé Gueye,Isabelle Lanièce,Allé Baba Dieng,A. Diouf,Christian Laurent,Souleymane Mboup,Papa Salif Sow,Eric Delaporte +11 more
TL;DR: This study underlines the early mortality pattern after HAART initiation and highlights the leading role of mycobacterial infections in the causes of death.
