Journal ArticleDOI
Global carbon dioxide emissions from inland waters
Peter A. Raymond,Jens Hartmann,Ronny Lauerwald,Ronny Lauerwald,Sebastian Sobek,Cory P. McDonald,Mark Hoover,David Butman,David Butman,Robert G. Striegl,Emilio Mayorga,Christoph Humborg,Pirkko Kortelainen,Hans H. Dürr,Michel Meybeck,Philippe Ciais,Peter L. Guth +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors report regional variations in global inland water surface area, dissolved CO2 and gas transfer velocity, and obtain global CO2 evasion rates of 1.8(-0.25) and 0.52 Pg C yr(-1) from lakes and reservoirs, where the upper and lower limits are respectively the 5th and 95th confidence interval percentiles.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Danube River dam on Black Sea biogeochemistry and ecosystem structure
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present long-term data sets of water and nutrient discharge from the River Danube to the Black Sea, revealing a reduction in the dissolved silicate load of the river by about two-thirds since dam constructions in the early 1970s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypoxia in the Baltic Sea and Basin-Scale Changes in Phosphorus Biogeochemistry
TL;DR: Analysis of data from 1970 to 2000 at the basin scale shows that the estimated volume of water with oxygen was actually at a minimum at the end of the longest so-called stagnation period on record, and addresses the legacy of eutrophication on a basinwide scale.
Journal ArticleDOI
Overview of eutrophication indicators to assess environmental status within the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive
João G. Ferreira,Jesper H. Andersen,Ángel Borja,Suzanne B. Bricker,Jordi Camp,M.C. Silva,Esther Garcés,Anna-Stiina Heiskanen,Christoph Humborg,Lydia Ignatiades,Christiane Lancelot,Alain Menesguen,Paul Tett,Nicolas Hoepffner,Ulrich Claussen +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of work carried out by the eutrophication task group, and report their main findings to the scientific community, focusing on integrated approaches that account for physico-chemical and biological components.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypoxia is increasing in the coastal zone of the Baltic sea
Daniel J. Conley,Jacob Carstensen,Juris Aigars,Philip Axe,Erik Bonsdorff,Tatjana Eremina,Britt-Marie Haahti,Christoph Humborg,Per Jönsson,Jonne Kotta,Christer Lannegren,Ulf Larsson,A. A. Maximov,Miguel Rodriguez Medina,Elzbieta Lysiak-Pastuszak,Nijole Remeikaite-Nikiene,Jakob Walve,Sunhild Wilhelms,Lovisa Zillén +18 more
TL;DR: 115 sites that have experienced hypoxia during the period 1955–2009 are identified increasing the global total to ca.
