Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter: Experiment summary after the first year of global mapping of Mars
David E. Smith,Maria T. Zuber,Herbert Frey,James B. Garvin,James W. Head,Duane O. Muhleman,Gordon H. Pettengill,Roger J. Phillips,Sean C. Solomon,H. Jay Zwally,W. Bruce Banerdt,Thomas C. Duxbury,Matthew P. Golombek,Frank G. Lemoine,Gregory A. Neumann,David D. Rowlands,Oded Aharonson,Peter G. Ford,Anton B. Ivanov,Catherine L. Johnson,Patrick J. McGovern,James B. Abshire,Robert S. Afzal,Xiaoli Sun +23 more
TL;DR: The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) has been used to measure the topography, surface roughness, and 1.064-μm reflectivity of Mars and the heights of volatile and dust clouds as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Internal Structure and Early Thermal Evolution of Mars from Mars Global Surveyor Topography and Gravity
Maria T. Zuber,Maria T. Zuber,Sean C. Solomon,Roger J. Phillips,David E. Smith,G. Leonard Tyler,Oded Aharonson,Georges Balmino,W. Bruce Banerdt,James W. Head,Catherine L. Johnson,Frank G. Lemoine,Patrick J. McGovern,Gregory A. Neumann,Gregory A. Neumann,David D. Rowlands,Shijie Zhong +16 more
TL;DR: The strength of the lithosphere beneath the ancient southern highlands suggests that the northern hemisphere was a locus of high heat flow early in martian history and the thickness of the elastic lithosphere increases with time of loading in the northern plains and Tharsis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter Investigation on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission
David E. Smith,Maria T. Zuber,Glenn B. Jackson,John F. Cavanaugh,Gregory A. Neumann,Haris Riris,Xiaoli Sun,Ronald S. Zellar,Craig Coltharp,Joseph A. Connelly,Richard B. Katz,Igor Kleyner,Peter Liiva,Adam Matuszeski,Erwan Mazarico,Jan F. McGarry,Anne Marie Novo-Gradac,Melanie N. Ott,Carlton Peters,Luis Ramos-Izquierdo,Lawrence Ramsey,David D. Rowlands,Stephen Schmidt,V. Stanley Scott,George B. Shaw,James C. Smith,Joseph Paul Swinski,Mark H. Torrence,Glenn Unger,Anthony W. Yu,Thomas W. Zagwodzki +30 more
TL;DR: The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) as discussed by the authors is an instrument on the payload of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft (LRO) which is designed to measure the shape of the Moon by measuring precisely the range from the spacecraft to the lunar surface.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent Greenland Ice Mass Loss by Drainage System from Satellite Gravity Observations
Scott B. Luthcke,H. J. Zwally,Waleed Abdalati,David D. Rowlands,Richard D. Ray,R. S. Nerem,Frank G. Lemoine,J. J. McCarthy,Douglas S. Chinn +8 more
TL;DR: The overall rate of loss reflects a considerable change in trend from a near balance during the 1990s but is smaller than some other recent estimates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Initial observations from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA)
David E. Smith,David E. Smith,Maria T. Zuber,Gregory A. Neumann,Frank G. Lemoine,Erwan Mazarico,Mark H. Torrence,Jan F. McGarry,David D. Rowlands,James W. Head,Thomas H. Duxbury,Oded Aharonson,Paul G. Lucey,Mark S. Robinson,Olivier S. Barnouin,John F. Cavanaugh,Xiaoli Sun,Peter Liiva,D. Mao,James C. Smith,Arlin E. Bartels +20 more
TL;DR: LOLA's initial global data sets as well as the first high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) of polar topography are described in this article, where LOLA has also provided the highest resolution global maps yet produced of slopes, roughness and the 1064-nm reflectance of the lunar surface.
