: The unpolarized absorption and circular dichroism spectra of the fundamental vibrational transitions of the chiral molecule, 4-methyl-2-oxetanone, are calculated ab initio. Harmonic force fields are obtained using Density Functional Theory (DFT), MP2, and SCF methodologies and a 5S4P2D/3S2P (TZ2P) basis set. DFT calculations use the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA), BLYP, and Becke3LYP (B3LYP) density functionals. Mid-IR spectra predicted using LSDA, BLYP, and B3LYP force fields are of significantly different quality, the B3LYP force field yielding spectra in clearly superior, and overall excellent, agreement with experiment. The MP2 force field yields spectra in slightly worse agreement with experiment than the B3LYP force field. The SCF force field yields spectra in poor agreement with experiment.The basis set dependence of B3LYP force fields is also explored: the 6-31G* and TZ2P basis sets give very similar results while the 3-21G basis set yields spectra in substantially worse agreements with experiment. jg

Ab initio calculation of vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra using density functional force fields

The recent explosive growth in research on catalysis by supported single metal atoms proves the scientific interest in this new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis. A supported single-atom catalyst (SAC) contains only isolated individual atoms dispersed on, and/or coordinated with, the surface atoms of an appropriate support. SACs not only maximize the atom efficiency of expensive metals but also provide an alternative strategy to tune the activity and selectivity of a catalytic reaction. When single metal atoms are strongly anchored onto high-surface-area supports, SACs offer a great potential to significantly transform the field of heterogeneous catalysis, which has been critical to enabling many important technologies. In this Perspective, I discuss the most recent advances in preparing, characterizing, and catalytically testing SACs with a focus on correlating the structural perspective of the anchored single metal atoms to the observed catalytic performances. Catalysis by Supported Single Metal Atoms

In heterogeneous single-metal-site catalysts (HSMSCs) the active metal centres are located individually on a support and are stabilized by neighbouring surface atoms such as nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur. Modern characterization techniques allow the identification of these individual metal atoms on a given support, and the resulting materials are often referred as single-atom catalysts. Their electronic properties and catalytic activity are tuned by the interaction between the central metal and the neighbouring surface atoms, and their atomically dispersed nature allows for metal utilization of up to 100%. In this way, HSMSCs provide new opportunities for catalysis, and with respect to structure build a bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, selected publications from 2010 in this area are reviewed and their perspectives for the near future are highlighted. Where appropriate, comparisons between HSMSCs and homogeneous/heterogeneous counterparts are presented. Single-atom catalysts have drawn increasing attention as methods for their preparation and characterization improve. Here, Beller and co-workers discuss the latest developments in the field of single-metal-site catalysts, discussing how this catalyst class bridges heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, and providing a perspective on how the field might continue to develop.

Bridging homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis by heterogeneous single-metal-site catalysts

Cofactor-mimetic aerobic oxidation has conceptually merged with catalysis of syngas reactions to form a wide range of Markovnikov-selective olefin radical hydrofunctionalizations. We cover the development of the field and review contributions to reaction invention, mechanism, and application to complex molecule synthesis. Surface Organometallic and Coordination Chemistry toward Single-Site Heterogeneous Catalysts: Strategies, Methods, Structures, and Activities

Surface hydrides are ubiquitous in catalysis. However, their structures and properties are not as well-understood as those of their molecular counterparts, which have been extensively studied for the past 70 years. Hydrides isolated on surfaces have been characterized as stable entities on oxide surfaces or in zeolites. They have also been proposed as reaction intermediates in numerous catalytic processes (hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, etc.). They have also been prepared via surface organometallic chemistry. In this review, we describe their key structural features and spectroscopic signatures. We discuss their reactivity and stability and also point out unexplored areas.

Isolated Surface Hydrides: Formation, Structure, and Reactivity

The activation and conversion of hydrocarbons is one of the most important challenges in chemistry. Transition-metal ions (V, Cr, Fe, Co, etc.) isolated on silica surfaces are known to catalyze such processes. The mechanisms of these processes are currently unknown but are thought to involve C–H activation as the rate-determining step. Here, we synthesize well-defined Co(II) ions on a silica surface using a metal siloxide precursor followed by thermal treatment under vacuum at 500 °C. We show that these isolated Co(II) sites are catalysts for a number of hydrocarbon conversion reactions, such as the dehydrogenation of propane, the hydrogenation of propene, and the trimerization of terminal alkynes. We then investigate the mechanisms of these processes using kinetics, kinetic isotope effects, isotopic labeling experiments, parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP) NMR, and comparison with a molecular analog. C–H Activation on Co,O Sites: Isolated Surface Sites versus Molecular Analogs

A cobalt hydride has been proposed as an intermediate in many reactions of the Co(dmgBF2)2L2 system, but its observation has proven difficult. We have observed the UV-vis spectra of Co(dmgBF2)2L2 (1) in CH3CN under hydrogen pressures of up to 70 atm. A Co(I) compound (6a) with an exchangeable proton is eventually formed. We have determined the bond dissociation free energy and pK(a) of the new O-H bond in 6a to be 50.5 kcal/mol and 13.4, respectively, in CH3CN, matching previous reports.

The reaction of cobaloximes with hydrogen: products and thermodynamics.

Under H2, the radical cyclization of appropriate dienes can be catalyzed by cobaloximes. H• can be abstracted from an intermediate (presumably a cobalt hydride) by trityl radicals (Ar3C•) or by TEMPO. The rate-determining step in these reactions is the uptake of H2, which is second order in cobalt and first order in hydrogen; the third-order rate constant is 106(3) M–2·s–1.
