Quantitative sensory testing in the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain (DFNS): Somatosensory abnormalities in 1236 patients with different neuropathic pain syndromes
Christoph Maier,R. Baron,Thomas R. Tölle,Andreas Binder,Niels Birbaumer,Frank Birklein,Janne Gierthmühlen,Herta Flor,Christian Geber,Volker Huge,Elena K. Krumova,G. B. Landwehrmeyer,Walter Magerl,Christian Maihöfner,Helmut Richter,Roman Rolke,Andrea Scherens,A. Schwarz,Claudia Sommer,V. Tronnier,Nurcan Üçeyler,Michael Valet,Gunnar Wasner,D.-R. Treede +23 more
TL;DR: Somatosensory profiles with different combinations of loss and gain are shared across the major neuropathic pain syndromes, including thermal and mechanical hyperalgesias, which were most frequent in complex regional pain syndrome and peripheral nerve injury, allodynia in postherpetic neuralgia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reference data for quantitative sensory testing (QST): Refined stratification for age and a novel method for statistical comparison of group data
Walter Magerl,Elena K. Krumova,Ralf Baron,Thomas R. Tölle,Rolf-Detlef Treede,Christoph Maier +5 more
TL;DR: This report targeted two further problems: how to adjust for age‐related sensory changes, and how to compare groups of patients with the reference database, and presented a simple way of calculating method B for data that have been z‐normalized.
Journal ArticleDOI
Value of quantitative sensory testing in neurological and pain disorders: NeuPSIG consensus.
Miroslav Backonja,Nadine Attal,Ralf Baron,Didier Bouhassira,Mark Drangholt,Peter J. Dyck,Robert R. Edwards,Roy Freeman,Richard H. Gracely,Maija H. Haanpaa,Per Hansson,Samar Hatem,Elena K. Krumova,Troels S. Jensen,Christoph Maier,Gérard Mick,Andrew S.C. Rice,Roman Rolke,Rolf-Detlef Treede,Jordi Serra,Thomas R Toelle,Valeri Tugnoli,David Walk,Mark S. Walalce,Mark A. Ware,David Yarnitsky,Dan Ziegler +26 more
TL;DR: Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a psychophysical method used to quantify somatosensory function in response to controlled stimuli in healthy subjects and patients as discussed by the authors, which has not gained a large acceptance among clinicians for many reasons, and in significant part because of the lack of information about standards for performing QST, its potential utility and interpretation of results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Depression and changed pain perception: hints for a central disinhibition mechanism.
Sabrina Klauenberg,Christoph Maier,Hans-Jörg Assion,Axel Hoffmann,Elena K. Krumova,Walter Magerl,Andrea Scherens,Rolf-Detlef Treede,Georg Juckel +8 more
TL;DR: In the mostly pain‐free patients signs of an enhanced central hyperexcitability are even more pronounced than usually found in chronic pain patients, indicating common mechanisms in depressive disorder and chronic pain in accordance with the assumption of non‐pain associated mechanisms in Depression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensory signs in complex regional pain syndrome and peripheral nerve injury
Janne Gierthmühlen,Christoph Maier,Ralf Baron,Thomas R. Tölle,Rolf-Detlef Treede,Niels Birbaumer,Volker Huge,Jana Koroschetz,Elena K. Krumova,Meike Lauchart,Christian Maihöfner,Helmut Richter,Andrea Westermann +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors determined patterns of sensory signs in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type I and II and peripheral nerve injury (PNI) patients with upper-limb CRPS-I (n=298), CRPS II (n = 46), and PNI (n/72) were examined with quantitative sensory testing according to the protocol of the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain.
