Journal ArticleDOI
A low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet versus a low-fat diet to treat obesity and hyperlipidemia: a randomized, controlled trial.
TL;DR: Body weight, body composition, serum lipid levels, and adverse effects over 24 weeks in hyperlipidemic persons who were randomly assigned to follow a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic, or low-fat, low-cholesterol, reduced-calorie diet are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary carbohydrate restriction as the first approach in diabetes management: Critical review and evidence base
Richard D. Feinman,Wendy Pogozelski,Arne Astrup,Richard K. Bernstein,Eugene J. Fine,Eric C. Westman,Anthony Accurso,Lynda A. Frassetto,Barbara A. Gower,Samy I. McFarlane,Jørgen Vesti Nielsen,Thure Krarup,Laura R. Saslow,Karl S. Roth,Mary C Vernon,Jeff S. Volek,Gilbert B. Wilshire,Annika Dahlqvist,Ralf Sundberg,Ann Childers,Katharine Morrison,Anssi H Manninen,Hussain Dashti,Richard J. Wood,Jay Wortman,Nicolai Worm +25 more
TL;DR: 12 points of evidence supporting the use of low-carbohydrate diets as the first approach to treating type 2 diabetes and as the most effective adjunct to pharmacology in type 1 are presented and represent the best-documented, least controversial results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Protein, weight management, and satiety
Douglas Paddon-Jones,Eric C. Westman,Richard D. Mattes,Robert R. Wolfe,Arne Astrup,Margriet S. Westerterp-Plantenga +5 more
TL;DR: Any potential benefits associated with a moderately elevated protein intake must be evaluated in the light of customary dietary practices and individual variability.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Safety of Transdermal Nicotine as an Aid to Smoking Cessation in Patients with Cardiac Disease
Anne M. Joseph,Anne M. Joseph,Suzanne M. Norman,Linda H. Ferry,Allan V. Prochazka,Eric C. Westman,Bonnie G. Steele,Scott E. Sherman,Minot Cleveland,David O. Antonnucio,Neil Hartman,Paul G. McGovern +11 more
TL;DR: Transdermal nicotine does not cause a significant increase in cardiovascular events in high-risk outpatients with cardiac disease, and the efficacy of transdermal Nicotine as an aid to smoking cessation in such patients is limited and may not be sustained over time.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet versus a low-glycemic index diet on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Eric C. Westman,William S. Yancy,William S. Yancy,John C Mavropoulos,Megan L. Marquart,Jennifer R McDuffie,Jennifer R McDuffie +6 more
TL;DR: The diet lower in carbohydrate led to greater improvements in glycemic control, and more frequent medication reduction/elimination than the low glycemic index diet, and lifestyle modification using low carbohydrate interventions is effective for improving and reversing type 2 diabetes.
