Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of EEG and CSF 14-3-3 proteins as aids to the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Inga Zerr,Maurizio Pocchiari,Steven J. Collins,J.-P. Brandel,J de Pedro Cuesta,Richard Knight,H. Bernheimer,Franco Cardone,N. Delasnerie-Laupretre,N. Cuadrado Corrales,Anna Ladogana,Monika Bodemer,Ashley Fletcher,T. Awan,A. Ruiz Bremón,Herbert Budka,Jean-Louis Laplanche,Robert G. Will,Sigrid Poser +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison of clinical and neuropathologic diagnoses and evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity of EEG and 14-3-3 CSF immunoassay were conducted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficient transmission and characterization of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease strains in bank voles.
Romolo Nonno,Michele Angelo Di Bari,Franco Cardone,Gabriele Vaccari,Paola Fazzi,Giacomo Dell'Omo,Claudia Cartoni,Loredana Ingrosso,Aileen Boyle,Roberta Galeno,Marco Sbriccoli,Hans-Peter Lipp,Moira E. Bruce,Maurizio Pocchiari,Umberto Agrimi +14 more
TL;DR: The efficiency of primary transmission of prions from Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease patients to a wild rodent species, the bank vole, is comparable to that reported in transgenic mice carrying human prion protein, in spite of a lowPrion protein–sequence homology between man and vole.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pre-symptomatic detection of prions by cyclic amplification of protein misfolding
Claudio Soto,Laurence Anderes,Silvia Suardi,Franco Cardone,Joaquín Castilla,Marie Jose Frossard,Sergio Peano,Paula Saá,Lucia Limido,Michaela Carbonatto,James W. Ironside,Juan María Torres,Maurizio Pocchiari,Fabrizio Tagliavini +13 more
TL;DR: The effectiveness of the PMCA technology to detect the protease‐resistance disease‐associated prion protein (PrPres) in pre‐symptomatic stages indicates that PMCA may be useful for the development of an ultra‐sensitive diagnostic test to minimize the risk of further propagation of TSEs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection of Pathologic Prion Protein in the Olfactory Epithelium in Sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease
Gianluigi Zanusso,Sergio Ferrari,Franco Cardone,Paolo Zampieri,Matteo Gelati,Michele Fiorini,Alessia Farinazzo,Marina Paola Gardiman,Tiziana Cavallaro,Marina Bentivoglio,Pier Giorgio Righetti,Maurizio Pocchiari,Nicola Rizzuto,Salvatore Monaco +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined peripheral regions of the olfactory sensory pathway, including the Olfactory mucosa, to assess whether pathologic infectious prion protein (PrPSc) is deposited in the epithelium lining the nasal cavity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased Brain Synthesis of Prostaglandin E2 and F2-Isoprostane in Human and Experimental Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies
Luisa Minghetti,Anita Greco,Franco Cardone,Maria Puopolo,Anna Ladogana,S. Almonti,Colm Cunningham,Victor Hugh Perry,Maurizio Pocchiari,Giulio Levi +9 more
TL;DR: In sporadic CJD patients, high CSF levels of PGE2, but not 8-epi-PGF2α, correlated with short survival time, suggesting that the inflammatory response correlates with the clinical duration of disease.
