Early Neanderthal constructions deep in Bruniquel Cave in southwestern France
Jacques Jaubert,Sophie Verheyden,Sophie Verheyden,Dominique Genty,Michel Soulier,Hai Cheng,Hai Cheng,Dominique Blamart,Christian Burlet,Hubert Camus,Serge Delaby,Damien Deldicque,R. Lawrence Edwards,Catherine Ferrier,François Lacrampe-Cuyaubère,François Lévêque,Frédéric Maksud,Pascal Mora,Xavier Muth,Édouard Régnier,Jean-Noël Rouzaud,Frédéric Santos +21 more
TL;DR: The dating of annular constructions made of broken stalagmites found deep in Bruniquel Cave in southwest France gives a reliable and replicated age of 176.5 thousand years (±2.1 thousand years), making these edifices among the oldest known well-dated constructionsmade by humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coprolites as a source of information on the genome and diet of the cave hyena
Céline Bon,Véronique Berthonaud,Frédéric Maksud,Karine Labadie,Julie Poulain,François Artiguenave,Patrick Wincker,Jean-Marc Aury,Jean-Marc Elalouf +8 more
TL;DR: High-throughput sequencing of DNA from fossilized faeces yielded a wealth of DNA sequences for a Pleistocene carnivore and allowed unbiased identification of diet and the presence of abundant ancient DNA in the coprolites surveyed is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deciphering the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of the extinct cave bear in the Paleolithic painted cave of Chauvet
Céline Bon,Nicolas Caudy,Maud De Dieuleveult,Philippe Fosse,Michel Philippe,Frédéric Maksud,Eliane Beraud-Colomb,Eric Bouzaid,Rym Kefi,Christelle Laugier,Bernard Rousseau,Didier Casane,Johannes van der Plicht,Jean-Marc Elalouf +13 more
TL;DR: With the first mitochondrial genome for a Pleistocene carnivore to be delivered, this study establishes the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave as a new reservoir for Paleogenetic studies and provides a statistically secured molecular phylogeny assessing the cave bear as a sister taxon to the brown bear and polar bear clade.
Coudoulous I (Tour-de-Faure, Lot), site du Pléistocène moyen en Quercy : Bilan pluridisciplinaire.
Jacques Jaubert,Bertrand Kervazo,Jean-Philip Brugal,Pierre Chalard,Christophe Falguères,Marc Jarry,Marcel Jeannet,Cristina Lemorini,Antoine Louchart,Frédéric Maksud,Vincent Mourre,Yves Quinif,Céline Thiébaut +12 more

Journal ArticleDOI
Genome data on the extinct Bison schoetensacki establish it as a sister species of the extant European bison (Bison bonasus)
Pauline Palacio,Véronique Berthonaud,Claude Guérin,Josie Lambourdière,Frédéric Maksud,Michel Philippe,Delphine Plaire,Delphine Plaire,Thomas W. Stafford,Marie-Claude Marsolier-Kergoat,Marie-Claude Marsolier-Kergoat,Jean-Marc Elalouf,Jean-Marc Elalouf +12 more
TL;DR: Bison schoetensacki turns out to be a sister species of Bison bonasus, excluding the steppe bison Bison priscus as a direct ancestor of the European bison.
