Cardiovascular and metabolic effects of metformin in patients with type 1 diabetes (REMOVAL): a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial

John R. Petrie, +166 more
TL;DR: Investigating whether metformin treatment (added to titrated insulin therapy) reduced atherosclerosis, as measured by progression of common carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT), in adults with type 1 diabetes at increased risk for cardiovascular disease found no effect on endothelial function.
Journal ArticleDOI

Early detection of diabetic kidney disease by urinary proteomics and subsequent intervention with spironolactone to delay progression (PRIORITY) : a prospective observational study and embedded randomised placebo-controlled trial

Nete Tofte, +133 more
TL;DR: This study recruited people with type 2 diabetes, normal urinary albumin excretion, and preserved renal function from 15 specialist centres in ten European countries and tested whether a urinary proteomic risk classifier (CKD273) score was associated with development of microalbuminuria and whether progression to micro Albuminuria could be prevented with the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist spironolactone.
Journal ArticleDOI

Proteinuria and its relation to cardiovascular disease.

TL;DR: This review will address the prognostic implications of proteinuria in the general population as well as other specific disease states including diabetes, hypertension and heart failure and review therapeutic strategies that should be considered for patients with persistent proteinuria.
