Trial of the Route of Early Nutritional Support in Critically Ill Adults
Sheila Harvey,Francesca Parrott,David A Harrison,Danielle E. Bear,Ella Segaran,Richard Beale,Geoff Bellingan,Richard Leonard,Michael G. Mythen,Kathryn M Rowan +9 more
TL;DR: A pragmatic, randomized trial involving adults with an unplanned admission to one of 33 English intensive care units found no significant difference in 30-day mortality associated with the route of delivery of early nutritional support in critically ill adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Recombinant Surfactant Protein C–Based Surfactant on the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Roger G. Spragg,James F. Lewis,Hans-Dieter Walmrath,Jay A. Johannigman,Geoff Bellingan,Pierre-François Laterre,Michael C Witte,Guy A. Richards,Gerd Rippin,Frank Rathgeb,Dietrich Häfner,Friedemann J.H. Taut,Werner Seeger +12 more
TL;DR: Patients who received surfactant had a greater improvement in gas exchange during the 24-hour treatment period than patients who received standard therapy alone, suggesting the potential benefit of a longer treatment course.
Journal ArticleDOI
Medication errors: a prospective cohort study of hand-written and computerised physician order entry in the intensive care unit.
TL;DR: Introduction of CPOE was associated with a reduction in the proportion of MEs and an improvement in the overall patient outcome score (if intercepted errors were included).
Journal ArticleDOI
‘Matching Michigan’: a 2-year stepped interventional programme to minimise central venous catheter-blood stream infections in intensive care units in England
Julian Bion,Annette Richardson,Peter Hibbert,Jeanette Beer,Tracy Abrusci,Martin McCutcheon,Jane Cassidy,Jane Eddleston,Kevin Gunning,Geoff Bellingan,Mark Patten,David A Harrison +11 more
TL;DR: The marked reduction in CVC-BSI rates in English ICUs found in this study is likely part of a wider secular trend for a system-wide improvement in healthcare-associated infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community-acquired pneumonia on the intensive care unit: secondary analysis of 17,869 cases in the ICNARC Case Mix Programme Database
TL;DR: CAP makes up a small, but important and rising, proportion of adult ICU admissions and survival of over half of all cases vindicates the use of ICU facilities in CAP management, Nevertheless, overall mortality remains high, especially in those admitted later in their hospital stay.
