Journal ArticleDOI
Brain ferritin iron may influence age- and gender-related risks of neurodegeneration.
George Bartzokis,George Bartzokis,Todd A. Tishler,Todd A. Tishler,Po H. Lu,Po H. Lu,Pablo Villablanca,Lori L. Altshuler,Lori L. Altshuler,Michele Carter,Danny Huang,Nancy Edwards,Nancy Edwards,Jim Mintz,Jim Mintz +14 more
TL;DR: This is the first demonstration of gender differences in brain ferritin iron levels and it is possible that brain iron accumulation is a risk factor that can be modified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship between white matter fractional anisotropy and other indices of cerebral health in normal aging: Tract-based spatial statistics study of aging
Peter Kochunov,Paul M. Thompson,Jack L. Lancaster,George Bartzokis,George Bartzokis,Stephen M. Smith,Thomas R. Coyle,Donald R. Royall,Angela R. Laird,Peter T. Fox +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the relationship between FA and other structural indices of cerebral health, including gray matter thickness, sulcal span, and volume of T2-hyperintense WM in a group of 31 healthy aging individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lifespan trajectory of myelin integrity and maximum motor speed
George Bartzokis,George Bartzokis,Po H. Lu,Kathleen Tingus,Mario F. Mendez,Mario F. Mendez,Aurore Richard,Douglas G. Peters,Bolanle Oluwadara,Katherine A. Barrall,J. Paul Finn,Pablo Villablanca,Paul M. Thompson,Jim Mintz +13 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that in this very healthy male sample, maximum motor speed requiring high-frequency AP burst may depend on brain myelin integrity, which may aid in developing and targeting anti-aging treatments to mitigate age-related functional declines.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diffusion tensor imaging in preclinical and presymptomatic carriers of familial Alzheimer's disease mutations.
John M. Ringman,Joseph O'Neill,Daniel H. Geschwind,Luis D. Medina,Liana G. Apostolova,Yaneth Rodriguez,Barbara Schaffer,Arousiak Varpetian,Benjamin Y. Tseng,Freddy Ortiz,Jaime Fitten,Jeffrey L. Cummings,George Bartzokis +12 more
TL;DR: FA is decreased in the white matter in preclinical and even presymptomatic FAD mutation carriers, particularly in the late-myelinating tracts connecting limbic structures, and may provide a biomarker for early disease in sporadic Alzheimer's disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abuse of amphetamines and structural abnormalities in the brain.
Steven M. Berman,Joseph O'Neill,Scott C. Fears,George Bartzokis,George Bartzokis,Edythe D. London +5 more
TL;DR: Evidence that structural brain abnormalities are associated with abuse of amphetamines is reviewed and longitudinal designs in which multimodal datasets are acquired and are subjected to multivariate analyses would enhance the ability to provide general conclusions regarding the associations between amphetamine abuse and brain structure.
