Quantifying Age-Related Myelin Breakdown with MRI: Novel Therapeutic Targets for Preventing Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer's Disease
TL;DR: This myelin-centered model together with the technology that makes it possible to measure the trajectory of myelin breakdown provide a framework for developing novel treatments, as well as assessing efficacy of currently available treatments, intended to slow or reverse the breakdown process in both clinically healthy aswell as symptomatic populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalent iron metabolism gene variants associated with increased brain ferritin iron in healthy older men.
George Bartzokis,George Bartzokis,Po H. Lu,Todd A. Tishler,Todd A. Tishler,Douglas G. Peters,Douglas G. Peters,Anastasia Kosenko,Anastasia Kosenko,Katherine A. Barrall,J. Paul Finn,Pablo Villablanca,Gerhard Laub,Lori L. Altshuler,Lori L. Altshuler,Daniel H. Geschwind,Jim Mintz,Elizabeth B. Neely,James R. Connor +18 more
TL;DR: This work reports the first published evidence that these highly prevalent genetic variants in iron metabolism genes can influence brain iron levels in men, and clarifying mechanisms of brain iron accumulation may help identify novel interventions for age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical Outcome Following Neuroleptic Discontinuation in Patients With Remitted Recent-Onset Schizophrenia
Michael J. Gitlin,Keith H. Nuechterlein,Kenneth L. Subotnik,Joseph Ventura,Jim Mintz,David L. Fogelson,George Bartzokis,Manickam Aravagiri +7 more
TL;DR: The clinical course following neuroleptic discontinuation of patients with recent-onset schizophrenia who had been receiving maintenance antipsychotic treatment for at least 1 year was examined, with a low threshold for defining symptom reemergence used.
Journal ArticleDOI
Operationalizing protocol differences for EADC-ADNI manual hippocampal segmentation.
Marina Boccardi,Martina Bocchetta,Rossana Ganzola,Nicolas Robitaille,Alberto Redolfi,Simon Duchesne,Clifford R. Jack,Giovanni B. Frisoni,George Bartzokis,John G. Csernansky,Mony J. de Leon,Leyla deToledo-Morrell,Ronald J. Killiany,Stéphane Lehéricy,Nikolai Malykhin,Johannes Pantel,Jens C. Pruessner,Hilkka Soininen,Craig Watson +18 more
TL;DR: Hippocampal volumetry on magnetic resonance imaging is recognized as an Alzheimer's disease biomarker, and manual segmentation is the gold standard for measurement.
Journal Article
The incidence of T2-weighted MR imaging signal abnormalities in the brain of cocaine-dependent patients is age-related and region-specific
George Bartzokis,Iris B. Goldstein,Darwood B. Hance,Mace Beckson,Mace Beckson,David Shapiro,Po H. Lu,Po H. Lu,Nancy Edwards,Jim Mintz,Jim Mintz,Peter Bridge +11 more
TL;DR: Cocaine-dependent participants had a significantly increased age-related risk of white matter damage, and the possible clinical implications of this damage are discussed.
