Reconciling carbon-cycle concepts, terminology, and methods
F. S. Chapin,George M. Woodwell,James T. Randerson,Edward B. Rastetter,Gary M. Lovett,Dennis D. Baldocchi,Deborah A. Clark,Mark E. Harmon,David S. Schimel,Riccardo Valentini,Christian Wirth,John D. Aber,Jonathan J. Cole,Michael L. Goulden,Jennifer W. Harden,Martin Heimann,Robert W. Howarth,Pamela A. Matson,A. D. McGuire,Jerry M. Melillo,Harold A. Mooney,Jason C. Neff,Richard A. Houghton,Michael L. Pace,Michael G. Ryan,Steven W. Running,Osvaldo E. Sala,William H. Schlesinger,Ernst Detlef Schulze +28 more
TL;DR: In this article, the imbalance between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) was defined as a measure of the amount of carbon being transferred from one ecosystem to another.
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in the Carbon Content of Terrestrial Biota and Soils between 1860 and 1980: A Net Release of CO"2 to the Atmosphere
Richard A. Houghton,John E. Hobbie,Jerry M. Melillo,Berrien Moore,Bruce J. Peterson,Gaius R. Shaver,George M. Woodwell +6 more
TL;DR: According to this analysis, there has been a net release of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems worldwide since at least 1860 and the global carbon budget appears balanced if the low estimate for the biotic release ofcarbon given above is used with the higher estimates of oceanic uptake.
ECOSYSTEM SERVICES: Benefits Supplied to Human Societies by Natural Ecosystems
Gretchen C. Daily,Susan Alexander,Paul R. Ehrlich,Lawrence H. Goulder,Jane Lubchenco,Pamela A. Matson,Harold A. Mooney,Sandra Postel,Stephen H. Schneider,David Tilman,George M. Woodwell +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify and monitor ecosystem services both locally and globally, and for the incorporation of their value into decision-making processes, which is a critical need for identification and monitoring of ecosystem services.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Biota and the World Carbon Budget
George M. Woodwell,Robert H. Whittaker,William A. Reiners,Gene E. Likens,C. C. Delwiche,Daniel B. Botkin +5 more
TL;DR: The analysis shows through convergent lines of evidence that the biota is not a sink and may be a source of CO/sub 2/ as large or larger than the fossil fuel source.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global Climatic Change
TL;DR: In this article, a review of the effects of carbon dioxide and methane on the global climate is presented, and the response of terrestrial ecosystems as a biotic feedback is discussed, including reduction in fossil-fuel use, controls on deforestation, and reforestation.
