Journal ArticleDOI
Prospective analysis of traffic exposure as a risk factor for incident coronary heart disease: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
TL;DR: Higher long-term exposure to traffic is associated with incidence ofCHD, independent of other risk factors, and prospective data support an effect of traffic-related air pollution on the development of CHD in middle-age persons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality in hypercholesterolemic men predicted from an exercise test: The lipid research clinics coronary primary prevention trial
Lars Goran Ekelund,Chirayath M. Suchindran,Robert P. McMahon,Gerardo Heiss,Arthur S. Leon,Donald W. Romhilt,Carl L. Rubenstein,Jeffrey L. Probstfield,Joseph F. Ruwitch +8 more
TL;DR: A positive exercise electrocardiogram (ECG) has been proved to predict cardiovascular events in asymptomatic normolipidemic men, and the risk of death from coronary heart disease associated with a positive test was found to be 5.7 times higher in the placebo group and 4.8 in the cholestyramine group.
Journal ArticleDOI
The ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities) Study: JACC Focus Seminar 3/8
Jacqueline D. Wright,Aaron R. Folsom,Josef Coresh,A. Richey Sharrett,David Couper,Lynne E. Wagenknecht,Thomas H. Mosley,Christie M. Ballantyne,Eric Boerwinkle,Wayne D. Rosamond,Gerardo Heiss +10 more
TL;DR: Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) as mentioned in this paper initiated community-based surveillance for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidence and mortality and created a prospective cohort of 15,792 Black and White adults ages 45 to 64 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heart Failure Stages Among Older Adults in the Community: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.
Amil M. Shah,Brian Claggett,Laura R. Loehr,Patricia P. Chang,Kunihiro Matsushita,Dalane W. Kitzman,Suma H Konety,Anna Kucharska-Newton,Carla A. Sueta,Thomas H. Mosley,Jacqueline D. Wright,Josef Coresh,Gerardo Heiss,Aaron R. Folsom,Scott D. Solomon +14 more
TL;DR: The majority of older adults in the community are at risk for HF (Stages A or B), appreciably more compared with previous reports in younger community-based samples.
Journal ArticleDOI
Traffic exposure and lung function in adults: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study.
TL;DR: Higher traffic density was significantly associated with lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in women and this adds to growing evidence that chronic exposure to traffic related air pollution may adversely affect respiratory health.
