Smoking and Cardiac Structure and Function in the Elderly: The ARIC Study (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the relationship between smoking and echocardiographic measures in a large elderly cohort and found that current smokers had greater left ventricular (LV) mass index (80.4±1.1 versus 76.7±0.4 g/m2; P <0.001), higher prevalence of LV hypertrophy (15% versus 9%; P =0.008), and worse diastolic function, as reflected by higher E/E′ ratio (11.7 ± 0.2 versus 10.9± 0.1
Journal ArticleDOI

Studies of blood pressure in schoolchildren (ages 6–19) and their parents in an integrated suburban school district

TL;DR: Children in an integrated school district may have shared behaviors, goals, and environments contributing to shared BP, while differing environmental factors may become amplified with age and life experience and contribute to higher BP in black adults.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sickle Cell Trait and Incident Ischemic Stroke in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study

TL;DR: An increased risk of ischemic stroke in blacks with sickle cell trait is observed, and further investigation of the incidence and pathophysiology of stroke in patients with SCT is warranted.
Journal ArticleDOI

Television, physical activity, diet, and body weight status: the ARIC cohort

TL;DR: The hypothesis that time spent watching TV is associated with deleterious effects on physical activity, diet, and BMI is supported.
