Prediction of Incident Heart Failure in General Practice The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
Sunil K. Agarwal,Lloyd E. Chambless,Christie M. Ballantyne,Brad C. Astor,Alain G. Bertoni,Patricia P. Chang,Aaron R. Folsom,Max He,Ron C. Hoogeveen,Hanyu Ni,Pedro Miguel Quibrera,Wayne D. Rosamond,Stuart D. Russell,Eyal Shahar,Gerardo Heiss +14 more
TL;DR: The ARIC HF risk score is more parsimonious yet performs slightly better than the extant risk scores in predicting 10-year risk of incident HF, and the inclusion of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide markedly improves HF risk prediction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic variation in soluble epoxide hydrolase ( EPHX2 ) and risk of coronary heart disease: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study
Craig R. Lee,Kari E. North,Molly S. Bray,Myriam Fornage,John M. Seubert,John W. Newman,Bruce D. Hammock,David Couper,Gerardo Heiss,Darryl C. Zeldin +9 more
TL;DR: Genetic variation in E PHX2 was significantly associated with risk of incident CHD in Caucasians, implicating EPHX2 as a potential cardiovascular disease-susceptibility gene.
Journal ArticleDOI
Statin Use and Breast Cancer: Prospective Results From the Women's Health Initiative
Jane A. Cauley,Anne McTiernan,Rebecca J. Rodabough,Andrea Z. LaCroix,Douglas C. Bauer,Karen L. Margolis,Karen L. Margolis,Electra D. Paskett,Mara Z. Vitolins,Curt D. Furberg,Rowan T. Lasser,Mary Jo O'Sullivan,Robert L. Brunner,Gerardo Heiss,Lewis H. Kuller,Karen C. Johnson,Robert G. Brzyski,Gloria E. Sarto,Denise E. Bonds,Susan L. Hendrix +58 more
TL;DR: Overall statin use was not associated with invasive breast cancer incidence, and the finding that use of hydrophobic statins may be associated with lower Breast cancer incidence suggests possible within-class differences that warrant further evaluation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low-fat dietary pattern and risk of colorectal cancer: The women's health initiative randomized controlled dietary modification trial
Shirley A.A. Beresford,Karen C. Johnson,Cheryl Ritenbaugh,Norman L. Lasser,Linda G. Snetsclaar,Henry R. Black,Garnet L. Anderson,Annlouise R. Assaf,Tamsen Bassford,Deborah J. Bowen,Robert L. Vitolins,Jean Wactawski-Wende,Robert B. Wallace,Evelyn P Whitlock +46 more
TL;DR: This large trial gave no evidence that, when taken by midlife to late-life postmenopausal women, a low-fat diet decreases the risk of colorectal cancer over 8 years of observation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary Antioxidants and Carotid Artery Wall Thickness The ARIC Study
Stephen B. Kritchevsky,Tomoko Shimakawa,Grethe S. Tell,Barbara Dennis,Myra Carpenter,John H. Eckfeldt,Holmes Peacher-Ryan,Gerardo Heiss +7 more
TL;DR: These data provide limited support for the hypothesis that dietary vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol may protect against atherosclerotic disease, especially in individuals > 55 years old.
