Impact of Antiretroviral Therapy on Liver Fibrosis Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Adults With and Without HBV Coinfection in Zambia.
Michael J. Vinikoor,Michael J. Vinikoor,Michael J. Vinikoor,Edford Sinkala,Roma Chilengi,Lloyd Mulenga,Benjamin H. Chi,Zude Zyambo,Christopher J. Hoffmann,Michael S. Saag,Mary-Ann Davies,Matthias Egger,Gilles Wandeler +12 more
TL;DR: The percentage of HIV-infected Zambian adults with elevated liver stiffness suggestive of significant fibrosis/cirrhosis decreased following ART initiation-regardless of HBV status, which suggests that HIV infection plays a role in liver inflammation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neighbourhood socio-economic position, late presentation and outcomes in people living with HIV in Switzerland.
Aysel Gueler,Franziska Schoeni-Affolter,André Moser,Barbara Bertisch,Heiner C. Bucher,Alexandra Calmy,Matthias Cavassini,Bruno Ledergerber,Gilles Wandeler,Matthias Egger +9 more
TL;DR: Late presentation was more common and virologic response to cART less common in HIV-positive individuals living in neighbourhoods of lower SEP, but in contrast to the general population, there was no clear trend for mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alcohol use, viral hepatitis and liver fibrosis among HIV-positive persons in West Africa: a cross-sectional study
Antoine Jaquet,Gilles Wandeler,Marcellin Nouaman,Didier K. Ekouevi,Didier K. Ekouevi,Judicaël Tine,Akouda Patassi,Patrick A Coffie,Aristophane Tanon,Moussa Seydi,Alain Attia,François Dabis +11 more
TL;DR: This data indicates that liver fibrosis is often the first stage of liver disease in people living with HIV (PLWHIV) in industrialized countries and its correlates among PLWHIV in sub‐Saharan Africa are unknown.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monitoring of Antiretroviral Therapy and Mortality in HIV Programmes in Malawi, South Africa and Zambia: Mathematical Modelling Study
Janne Estill,Matthias Egger,Leigh F. Johnson,Thomas Gsponer,Gilles Wandeler,Mary-Ann Davies,Andrew Boulle,Robin Wood,Daniela Garone,Jeffrey S. A. Stringer,Jeffrey S. A. Stringer,Timothy B. Hallett,Olivia Keiser +12 more
TL;DR: Mortality in patients starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) is higher in Malawi and Zambia than in South Africa and whether different monitoring of ART could explain this mortality difference is examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in HIV/HBV-coinfected patients on tenofovir therapy: Relevance for screening strategies
Gilles Wandeler,Etienne Mauron,Andrew Atkinson,Jean-François Dufour,David Kraus,David Kraus,Peter Reiss,Lars Peters,François Dabis,Jan Fehr,Enos Bernasconi,Marc van der Valk,Colette Smit,Lars Klingen Gjærde,Jürgen K. Rockstroh,Didier Neau,Fabrice Bonnet,Andri Rauch +17 more
TL;DR: Whereas the incidence of HCC was high in cirrhotic HIV/HBV-coinfected individuals, it remained below the HCC screening threshold in patients without cirrhosis who started TDF aged <46 years old, and among non-cirrhotic individuals, the incidence was only above the commonly used screening threshold.
