This paper reviews the current status and implementation of battery chargers, charging power levels, and infrastructure for plug-in electric vehicles and hybrids. Charger systems are categorized into off-board and on-board types with unidirectional or bidirectional power flow. Unidirectional charging limits hardware requirements and simplifies interconnection issues. Bidirectional charging supports battery energy injection back to the grid. Typical on-board chargers restrict power because of weight, space, and cost constraints. They can be integrated with the electric drive to avoid these problems. The availability of charging infrastructure reduces on-board energy storage requirements and costs. On-board charger systems can be conductive or inductive. An off-board charger can be designed for high charging rates and is less constrained by size and weight. Level 1 (convenience), Level 2 (primary), and Level 3 (fast) power levels are discussed. Future aspects such as roadbed charging are presented. Various power level chargers and infrastructure configurations are presented, compared, and evaluated based on amount of power, charging time and location, cost, equipment, and other factors.

A U.S. Perspective of Plug-in Hybrids and an Example of Sizing Study, Prototype Development and Validation of Hybridized FC-NEV with Bi-directional Grid Inter-connect for Sustainable Local Transportation

This year, in the third year of FutureTruck competition, the Ohio State University team has taken the challenge to convert a 2002 Ford Explorer into a more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly SUV. This goal was achieved by use of a post-transmission, charge sustaining, parallel hybrid diesel-electric drivetrain. The main power source is a 2.5-liter, 103 kW advanced CIDI engine manufactured by VM Motori. A 55 kW Ecostar AC induction electric motor provides the supplemental power. The powertrain is managed by a state of the art supervisory control system which optimizes powertrain characteristics using advanced energy management and emission control algorithms. A unique driver interface implementing advanced telematics, and an interior designed specifically to reduce weight and be more environmentally friendly add to the utility of the vehicle as well as the consumer appeal. The BuckHybrid002 achieves 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, meets ULEV emissions standards and meets or exceeds all of the performance and customer demands embodied in the stock Explorer.

Design space exploration of hybrid electric vehicles is an important multi-objective global optimization problem. One of the main objectives is to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining satisfactory driveability performance and vehicle cost. The design problem often includes multiple design options, including different driveline architectures and component sizes, where different candidates have various trade-offs between different, in many cases contradictory, performance requirements. Thus, there is no global optimum but a set of Pareto-optimal solutions to be explored. The objective functions can be expensive to evaluate, due to time-consuming simulations, which requires careful selection of which candidates to evaluate. A design space exploration algorithm is proposed for finding the set of Pareto-optimal solutions when the design search space includes multiple design options. As a case study, powertrain optimization is performed for a medium-sized series hybrid electric delivery truck.

Design Space Exploration for Powertrain Electrification using Gaussian Processes

In this paper, we develop a decentralized controller with virtual inductance to improve the robustness of a DC microgrid with constant power loads (CPLs). It is well known that the key to the problem is increasing the damping in the system. The CPLs, on the other hand, exhibit a negative impedance effect that deteriorates the damping. To counteract the CPLs, various methods including centralized and droop control have been developed. However, existing work have strict requirements on information acquisition and impose significant influences on microgrid's operating points. Instead, this paper develops a decentralized controller with virtual inductance that can virtually increases the damping in a DC microgrid and effectively accomplish the robustness enhancement objective without shifting the operating points. A simulation example is shown to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.
