TL;DR: It is suggested that severe asthma might be a different form of asthma rather than an increase in asthma symptoms, and longitudinal studies and interventions are needed to define the mechanisms in severe asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transforming Growth Factor- β Expression in Mucosal Biopsies in Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis
A M Vignola,Pascal Chanez,Giuseppina Chiappara,Anna Maria Merendino,Elisabetta Pace,Aroldo Rizzo,A M la Rocca,Vincenzo Bellia,Giovanni Bonsignore,Jean Bousquet +9 more
TL;DR: A significant correlation was found between the number of epithelial or submucosal cells expressing TGF- β in both asthma and chronic bronchitis and basement membrane thickness and f...

Sputum Metalloproteinase-9/Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-1 Ratio Correlates with Airflow Obstruction in Asthma and Chronic Bronchitis
Antonio M. Vignola,Loredana Riccobono,Angela Mirabella,Mirella Profita,Pascal Chanez,Vincenzo Bellia,Gisèle Mautino,Provvidenza D'accardi,Jean Bousquet,Giovanni Bonsignore +9 more
TL;DR: Airway inflammation in asthma and chronic bronchitis is associated with an imbalance between MMP-9 and TIMP-1 which may have a role in the pathogenesis of ECM remodeling and airflow obstruction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Airway Remodeling in Asthma
Antonio M. Vignola,Franco Mirabella,Giorgio Costanzo,Rossana Di Giorgi,Mark Gjomarkaj,Vincenzo Bellia,Giovanni Bonsignore +6 more
TL;DR: Airway remodeling appears to be of great importance for understanding the long-term follow-up of asthmatic patients, but there are major gaps in knowledge and Physiologic correlations with pathology represent a major missing link that should be filled.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autonomic cardiac regulation in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: evidence from spontaneous baroreflex analysis during sleep
Gianfranco Parati,M. Di Rienzo,Maria R. Bonsignore,Giuseppe Insalaco,Oreste Marrone,Paolo Castiglioni,Giovanni Bonsignore,G. Mancia +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence that spontaneous baroceptor reflex sensitivity is depressed in severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is provided, suggesting that in such patients baroreflex dysfunction and not only chemoreceptor stimulation by hypoxia may be involved in the sympathetic activation which occurs during sleep.
