Journal ArticleDOI
Lack of antibody affinity maturation due to poor Toll-like receptor stimulation leads to enhanced respiratory syncytial virus disease
Maria Florencia Delgado,Silvina Coviello,A. Clara Monsalvo,Guillermina A. Melendi,Johanna Zea Hernandez,Juan P. Batalle,Leandro Diaz,Alfonsina Trento,Herng Yu Chang,Wayne Mitzner,Jeffrey V. Ravetch,José A. Melero,Pablo M. Irusta,Fernando P. Polack +13 more
TL;DR: It is shown that inactivated RSV vaccines may be rendered safe and effective by inclusion of TLR agonists in their formulation, and affinity maturation is identified as a key factor for the safe immunization of infants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pediatric Hospitalizations Associated with 2009 Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) in Argentina
Romina Libster,Jimena Bugna,Silvina Coviello,Diego R. Hijano,Mariana Dunaiewsky,Natalia Reynoso,María L Cavalieri,Maria C. Guglielmo,M. Soledad Areso,Tomas Gilligan,Fernanda Santucho,Graciela Cabral,Gabriela Gregorio,Rina Moreno,Maria I. Lutz,Alicia L. Panigasi,Liliana Saligari,Mauricio T. Caballero,Rodrigo M. Chappell,Kathryn M. Edwards,Guillermina A. Melendi,Fernando P. Polack +48 more
TL;DR: Pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza was associated with pediatric death rates that were 10 times the rates for seasonal influenza in previous years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Severe pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza disease due to pathogenic immune complexes
Ana Clara Monsalvo,Juan P. Batalle,M Florencia Lopez,Jens C. Krause,Jennifer M. Klemenc,Johanna Zea Hernandez,Bernardo Maskin,Jimena Bugna,Carlos Rubinstein,Leandro Aguilar,Liliana Dalurzo,Romina Libster,Vilma Savy,Elsa Baumeister,Liliana Aguilar,Graciela Cabral,Julia Font,Liliana Solari,Kevin P. Weller,Joyce E. Johnson,Marcela Echavarria,Kathryn M. Edwards,James D. Chappell,James E. Crowe,John V. Williams,Guillermina A. Melendi,Fernando P. Polack +26 more
TL;DR: P preexisting serum antibodies that cross-react with, but do not protect against, 2009 H1N1 influenza virus in middle-aged adults are found and provide a previously unknown biological mechanism for the unusual age distribution of severe cases during influenza pandemics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antiviral Activity of Nrf2 in a Murine Model of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Disease
Hye Youn Cho,Farhad Imani,Laura Miller-DeGraff,Dianne M. Walters,Guillermina A. Melendi,Masayuki Yamamoto,Fernando P. Polack,Steven R. Kleeberger +7 more
TL;DR: An association of oxidant stress with RSV pathogenesis and a key role for the Nrf2-ARE pathway in host defense against RSV are supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
The cysteine-rich region of respiratory syncytial virus attachment protein inhibits innate immunity elicited by the virus and endotoxin.
Fernando P. Polack,Pablo M. Irusta,Pablo M. Irusta,Scott J. Hoffman,M. Paula Schiatti,Guillermina A. Melendi,M. Florencia Delgado,Federico R. Laham,Bhagvanji Thumar,R. Michael Hendry,José A. Melero,Ruth A. Karron,Peter L. Collins,Steven R. Kleeberger +13 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the GCRR is a powerful inhibitor of the innate immune response against RSV, and that early secretion of glycoprotein is critical to modulate inflammation after RSV infection.
