Journal ArticleDOI
Protein kinases responsible for the phosphorylation of the nuclear egress core complex of human cytomegalovirus.
Eric Sonntag,Jens Milbradt,Adriana Svrlanska,Hanife Strojan,Sigrun Häge,Alexandra Kraut,Anne-Marie Hesse,Bushra Amin,Bushra Amin,Uwe Sonnewald,Yohann Couté,Manfred Marschall +11 more
TL;DR: These findings provide the first evidence that the HCMV core NEC is phosphorylated by cellular kinases, and that the complex pattern of NEC phosphorylation has functional relevance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chemically sulfated polysaccharides from natural sources: Assessment of extraction-sulfation efficiencies, structural features and antiviral activities.
Shuvam Mukherjee,Kanika Ghosh,Friedrich Hahn,Christina Wangen,Hanife Strojan,Regina Müller,Namrata Anand,Imran Ali,Kaushik Bera,Bimalendu Ray,Corina Hutterer,Manfred Marschall,Sayani Ray +12 more
TL;DR: This study reports the production of highly bioactive sulfated polysaccharides, originally present in a nonsulfated, dormant state in natural sources, and demonstrates their antiviral activity at a low degree of cytotoxicity, and suggests the inhibition of virus entry as the main mode of antiviral action.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Cytomegalovirus Nuclear Capsids Associate with the Core Nuclear Egress Complex and the Viral Protein Kinase pUL97
Jens Milbradt,Eric Sonntag,Sabrina Wagner,Hanife Strojan,Christina Wangen,Tihana Lenac Rovis,Berislav Lisnić,Stipan Jonjić,Heinrich Sticht,William J. Britt,Ursula Schlötzer-Schrehardt,Manfred Marschall +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, electron microscopy-based data demonstrate the association of both nuclear capsids and NEC proteins at nuclear lamina budding sites and support a refined concept of HCMV nuclear trafficking and NEC-capsid interaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Novel cytomegalovirus-inhibitory compounds of the class pyrrolopyridines show a complex pattern of target binding that suggests an unusual mechanism of antiviral activity.
Friedrich Hahn,Corina Hutterer,Christophe Henry,Stuart T. Hamilton,Hanife Strojan,Alexandra Kraut,Ulrike Schulte,Martin Schütz,Stephan Kohrt,Christina Wangen,José Pfizer,Yohann Couté,William D. Rawlinson,Stefan Strobl,Manfred Marschall +14 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest a multifaceted pattern of compound‐target binding in connection with an unusual mode of action, opening up further opportunities of antiviral drug development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential upregulation of host cell protein kinases by the replication of α-, β- and γ-herpesviruses provides a signature of virus-specific signalling.
Manfred Marschall,Hanife Strojan,Richard Kiener,Christina Wangen,Eric Sonntag,Regina Müller,Isabel Zeitträger,Sabrina Wagner,Thomas Stamminger,Jens Milbradt,Uta Behrends,Nina Körber,Tanja Bauer,Silke Schrödel,Christian Thirion,Ralf Wagner,Corina Hutterer +16 more
TL;DR: The study confirms the correlation between herpesviral replication and modulation of signalling kinases, possibly exploitable for the in vitro characterization of viral infections.
