Journal ArticleDOI
IMU-838, a Developmental DHODH Inhibitor in Phase II for Autoimmune Disease, Shows Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Efficacy In Vitro.
Friedrich Hahn,Christina Wangen,Sigrun Häge,Antonia Sophia Peter,Gerhard Dobler,Brett L. Hurst,Justin G. Julander,Jonas Fuchs,Zsolt Ruzsics,Klaus Überla,Hans-Martin Jäck,Roger G. Ptak,Andreas Muehler,Manfred Gröppel,Daniel Vitt,Evelyn Peelen,Hella Kohlhof,Manfred Marschall +17 more
TL;DR: Vidofludimus, the active determinant of IMU-838, exerted a broad-spectrum activity against a selection of major human pathogenic viruses, suggesting that developmental DHODH inhibitors represent promising candidates for use as anti-SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chemically sulfated polysaccharides from natural sources: Assessment of extraction-sulfation efficiencies, structural features and antiviral activities.
Shuvam Mukherjee,Kanika Ghosh,Friedrich Hahn,Christina Wangen,Hanife Strojan,Regina Müller,Namrata Anand,Imran Ali,Kaushik Bera,Bimalendu Ray,Corina Hutterer,Manfred Marschall,Sayani Ray +12 more
TL;DR: This study reports the production of highly bioactive sulfated polysaccharides, originally present in a nonsulfated, dormant state in natural sources, and demonstrates their antiviral activity at a low degree of cytotoxicity, and suggests the inhibition of virus entry as the main mode of antiviral action.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human Cytomegalovirus Nuclear Capsids Associate with the Core Nuclear Egress Complex and the Viral Protein Kinase pUL97
Jens Milbradt,Eric Sonntag,Sabrina Wagner,Hanife Strojan,Christina Wangen,Tihana Lenac Rovis,Berislav Lisnić,Stipan Jonjić,Heinrich Sticht,William J. Britt,Ursula Schlötzer-Schrehardt,Manfred Marschall +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, electron microscopy-based data demonstrate the association of both nuclear capsids and NEC proteins at nuclear lamina budding sites and support a refined concept of HCMV nuclear trafficking and NEC-capsid interaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
In vivo proof-of-concept for two experimental antiviral drugs, both directed to cellular targets, using a murine cytomegalovirus model.
Eric Sonntag,Friedrich Hahn,Luca D. Bertzbach,Lisa Seyler,Christina Wangen,Regina Müller,Pierre Tannig,Benedikt W. Grau,Matthias Baumann,Eldar Zent,Gunther Zischinsky,Jan Eickhoff,Benedikt B. Kaufer,Tobias Bäuerle,Svetlana B. Tsogoeva,Manfred Marschall +15 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided for a strong antiviral potency in vivo and proof‐of‐concept for both experimental drugs, which may encourage their further drug development, possibly including pharmacologically optimized derivatives, for a potential use in future antiherpesviral treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns of Autologous and Nonautologous Interactions between Core Nuclear Egress Complex (NEC) Proteins of α-, β- and γ-Herpesviruses
Sigrun Häge,Eric Sonntag,Eva Maria Borst,Pierre Tannig,Lisa Seyler,Tobias Bäuerle,Susanne M. Bailer,Chung-Pei Lee,Regina Müller,Christina Wangen,Jens Milbradt,Manfred Marschall +11 more
TL;DR: This study underlines that herpesviral core NEC proteins are functionally conserved regarding complementarity of core NEC interactions, which were found either virus-specific or restricted within subfamilies.
