Efficacy and Safety of Monoclonal Antibody to Human Tumor Necrosis Factor α in Patients With Sepsis Syndrome: A Randomized, Controlled, Double-blind, Multicenter Clinical Trial
Edward Abraham,Richard G. Wunderink,Henry Silverman,Trish M. Perl,Stanley A. Nasraway,Howard Levy,R Bone,Richard P. Wenzel,Robert A. Balk,R Allred +9 more
TL;DR: There was no decrease in mortality between placebo and TNF-α MAb in all infused patients, and in septic shock patients who received T NF- α MAb, a significant reduction in mortality was present 3 days after infusion; however, although a trend toward reduced mortality continued at 28 days following treatment with TTFMAb, the difference in mortality among shock patients treated with placebo or TFB was not significant.
Journal ArticleDOI
Double-blind randomised controlled trial of monoclonal antibody to human tumour necrosis factor in treatment of septic shock
Edward Abraham,Antonio Anzueto,Guillermo Gutierrez,Sidney Tessler,Gerry San Pedro,Richard G. Wunderink,Anthony R. Dal Nogare,Stanley A. Nasraway,Steve Berman,Robert N. Cooney,Howard Levy,Robert P. Baughman,Mark J. Rumbak,R. Bruce Light,Lona Poole,Randy Allred,John Constant,James E Pennington,Steven B. Porter +18 more
TL;DR: It was found there was no association between therapy with TNFα MAb and increased rapidity in reversal of initial shock or prevention of subsequent shock, and baseline plasma interleukin-6 concentrations were not associated with improvement in survival after TNF α MAb therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Trial of Intravenous Ribavirin for the Treatment of Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome in North America
Gregory J. Mertz,Lil Miedzinski,Diane Goade,Andrew T. Pavia,Brian Hjelle,Christine O Hansbarger,Howard Levy,Frederick Koster,Kenneth F. Baum,Adeline Lindemulder,Wenquan Wang,Laura Riser,Humberto Fernandez,Richard J. Whitley +13 more
TL;DR: The rate of accrual of subjects in the present study was inadequate and the lack of trends supporting the use of intravenous ribavirin suggests that it is probably ineffective in the treatment of HCPS in the cardiopulmonary stage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Equal aspiration rates in gastrically and transpylorically fed critically ill patients.
TL;DR: There was no difference in aspiration rates between gastrically and transpylorically fed critically ill patients in the intensive care unit, and clinical suspicion of aspiration was insensitive and detected only 60% of isotopically documented aspirations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unplanned Extubation: Predictors of Successful Termination of Mechanical Ventilatory Support
TL;DR: Patients who require reintubation have significantly higher preextubation FIo2 and ventilatory requirements than patients who remain extubated, and reintsubation after unplanned extubation should not be considered mandatory.
