An inflammatory cytokine signature predicts COVID-19 severity and survival.
Diane Marie Del Valle,Seunghee Kim-Schulze,Hsin-Hui Huang,Noam D. Beckmann,Sharon Nirenberg,Bo Wang,Yonit Lavin,Talia H. Swartz,Deepu Madduri,Aryeh Stock,Thomas U. Marron,Hui Xie,Manishkumar Patel,Kevin Tuballes,Oliver Van Oekelen,Adeeb Rahman,Patricia Kovatch,Judith A. Aberg,Eric E. Schadt,Sundar Jagannath,Madhu Mazumdar,Alexander W. Charney,Adolfo Firpo-Betancourt,Damodara Rao Mendu,Jeffrey S. Jhang,David Reich,Keith Sigel,Carlos Cordon-Cardo,Marc Feldmann,Samir Parekh,Miriam Merad,Sacha Gnjatic +31 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that serum IL-6 and TNF-α levels should be considered in the management and treatment of patients with COVID-19 to stratify prospective clinical trials, guide resource allocation and inform therapeutic options.

An inflammatory cytokine signature helps predict COVID-19 severity and death
Diane Marie Del Valle,Seunghee Kim-Schulze,Huang Hsin-hui,Noam D. Beckmann,Sharon Nirenberg,Bo Wang,Yonit Lavin,Talia H. Swartz,Deepu Madduri,Aryeh Stock,Thomas U. Marron,Hui Xie,Manishkumar Patel,Oliver Van Oekelen,Adeeb Rahman,Patricia Kovatch,Judith A. Aberg,Eric E. Schadt,Sundar Jagannath,Madhu Mazumdar,Alexander W. TL;DR: It is found that high serum IL-6, IL-8, and TNF- levels at the time of hospitalization were strong and independent predictors of patient survival and death, when adjusting for disease severity score, common laboratory inflammation markers, hypoxia and other vitals, demographics, and a range of comorbidities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Downregulation of exhausted cytotoxic T cells in gene expression networks of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.
Noam D. Beckmann,Phillip H. Comella,Esther Cheng,Lauren Lepow,Aviva G. Beckmann,Scott R. Tyler,Konstantinos Mouskas,Nicole W. Simons,Gabriel E. Hoffman,Nancy Francoeur,Diane Marie Del Valle,Gurpawan Kang,Anh N. Diaz Soto,Swaroop Bose,Kent Madrid,Ethan Ellis,Elyze Merzier,Konstantinos Vlachos,Nataly Fishman,Manying Tin,Melissa Smith,Hui Xie,Manishkumar Patel,Kai Nie +49 more
TL;DR: The authors performed RNA sequencing of blood from patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and controls to find diseaseassociated genes clustered in a co-expression module annotated to CD56dimCD57+ natural killer (NK) cells and exhausted CD8+ T cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationships between neural activation during a reward task and peripheral cytokine levels in youth with diverse psychiatric symptoms.
Kailyn A.L. Bradley,Emily R. Stern,Emily R. Stern,Carmen M. Alonso,Hui Xie,Seunghee Kim-Schulze,Vilma Gabbay,Vilma Gabbay +7 more
TL;DR: Investigation of specific markers of immune function showed associations between inflammatory processes and activation of posterior default mode network, prefrontal cortex, and basal ganglia regions during multiple phases of reward processing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Peripheral immune cell reactivity and neural response to reward in patients with depression and anhedonia.
Sara Costi,Laurel S. Morris,Abigail B Collins,Nicolas F. Fernandez,Manishkumar Patel,Hui Xie,Seunghee Kim-Schulze,Emily R. Stern,Katherine A. Collins,Katherine A. Collins,Flurin Cathomas,Michael K. Parides,Alexis E. Whitton,Diego A. Pizzagalli,Scott J. Russo,James W. Murrough +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined dynamic release of inflammatory blood factors from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in depressed patients and associations with neural and behavioral measures of reward processing.
