Journal ArticleDOI
Evenness drives consistent diversity effects in intensive grassland systems across 28 European sites
Laura Kirwan,Andreas Lüscher,Maria-Teresa Sebastià,John A. Finn,Rosemary P. Collins,C. Porqueddu,Áslaug Helgadóttir,Ole Hans Baadshaug,Caroline Brophy,C. Coran,Sigridur Dalmannsdottir,Ignacio Delgado,Anjo Elgersma,Michael Fothergill,B. E. Frankow-Lindberg,Piotr Golinski,Philippe Grieu,Anne-Maj Gustavsson,Mats Höglind,Olivier Huguenin-Elie,C. Iliadis,Marit Jørgensen,Zydre Kadziuliene,T. Karyotis,Tor Lunnan,M. Malengier,S. Maltoni,Victoria Meyer,D. Nyfeler,P. Nykanen-Kurki,J. Parente,H.J. Smit,Ulrich Thumm,John Connolly +33 more
TL;DR: In this article, the above-ground biomass of four-species mixtures (two legumes and two grasses) in intensive grassland systems was consistently greater than that expected from monoculture performance, even at high productivity levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem function enhanced by combining four functional types of plant species in intensively managed grassland mixtures: a 3‐year continental‐scale field experiment
John A. Finn,Laura Kirwan,John Connolly,M. Teresa Sebastià,Áslaug Helgadóttir,Ole Hans Baadshaug,Gilles Bélanger,Alistair Black,Caroline Brophy,Rosemary P. Collins,Jure Čop,Sigridur Dalmannsdottir,Ignacio Delgado,Anjo Elgersma,Michael Fothergill,B. E. Frankow-Lindberg,An Ghesquiere,Barbara Golińska,Piotr Golinski,Philippe Grieu,Anne-Maj Gustavsson,Mats Höglind,Olivier Huguenin-Elie,Marit Jørgensen,Zydre Kadziuliene,Päivi Kurki,R. Llurba,Tor Lunnan,C. Porqueddu,Matthias Suter,Ulrich Thumm,Andreas Lüscher +31 more
TL;DR: A coordinated continental-scale field experiment was used to compare the biomass yield of monocultures and four species mixtures associated with intensively managed agricultural grassland systems and found that mixtures maintained a resistance to weed invasion over at least 3 years.
Journal ArticleDOI
Weed suppression greatly increased by plant diversity in intensively managed grasslands: A continental-scale experiment
John Connolly,Maria-Teresa Sebastià,Laura Kirwan,Laura Kirwan,John A. Finn,R. Llurba,Matthias Suter,Rosemary P. Collins,C. Porqueddu,Áslaug Helgadóttir,Ole Hans Baadshaug,Gilles Bélanger,Alistair Black,Caroline Brophy,Jure Čop,Sigridur Dalmannsdottir,Ignacio Delgado,Anjo Elgersma,Michael Fothergill,B. E. Frankow-Lindberg,An Ghesquiere,Piotr Golinski,Philippe Grieu,Anne-Maj Gustavsson,Mats Höglind,Olivier Huguenin-Elie,Marit Jørgensen,Zydre Kadziuliene,Tor Lunnan,Paivi Nykanen-Kurki,Àngela Ribas,Friedhelm Taube,Ulrich Thumm,Alex De Vliegher,Andreas Lüscher +34 more
TL;DR: Effects of diversity on weed suppression were consistently strong across mixtures varying widely in species' proportions and over time, and these diversity benefits in intensively managed grasslands are relevant for the sustainable intensification of agriculture and, importantly, are achievable through practical farm‐scale actions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Major shifts in species’ relative abundance in grassland mixtures alongside positive effects of species diversity in yield: a continental-scale experiment
Caroline Brophy,John A. Finn,Andreas Lüscher,Matthias Suter,Laura Kirwan,Maria-Teresa Sebastià,Áslaug Helgadóttir,Ole Hans Baadshaug,Gilles Bélanger,Alistair Black,Rosemary P. Collins,Jure Čop,Sigridur Dalmannsdottir,Ignacio Delgado,Anjo Elgersma,Michael Fothergill,B. E. Frankow-Lindberg,An Ghesquiere,Barbara Golińska,Piotr Goliński,Philippe Grieu,Anne-Maj Gustavsson,Mats Höglind,Olivier Huguenin-Elie,Marit Jørgensen,Zydre Kadziuliene,Päivi Kurki,R. Llurba,Tor Lunnan,C. Porqueddu,Ulrich Thumm,John Connolly +31 more
TL;DR: Evidence strongly supports the sowing of multi-species mixtures that include legumes over the long-standing practice of sowing grass monocultures to facilitate the maintenance of species diversity and especially persistence of legume over time, and to preserve the strength of yield increases associated with diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Agrodiversity Experiment: three years of data from a multisite study in intensively managed grasslands
