This paper provides an overview of recent advances in research on the interfacial characteristics of carbon nanotube–polymer nanocomposites. The state of knowledge about the chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes as well as the interaction at the interface between the carbon nanotube and the polymer matrix is presented. The primary focus of this paper is on identifying the fundamental relationship between nanocomposite properties and interfacial characteristics. The progress, remaining challenges, and future directions of research are discussed. The latest developments of both microscopy and scattering techniques are reviewed, and their respective strengths and limitations are briefly discussed. The main methods available for the chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes are summarized, and particular interest is given to evaluation of their advantages and disadvantages. The critical issues related to the interaction at the interface are discussed, and the important techniques for improving the properties of carbon nanotube–polymer nanocomposites are introduced. Additionally, the mechanism responsible for the interfacial interaction at the molecular level is briefly described. Furthermore, the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the nanocomposites are discussed separately, and their influencing factors are briefly introduced. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities for efficiently translating the remarkable properties of carbon nanotubes to polymer matrices are summarized in the hopes of facilitating the development of this emerging area. Potential topics of oncoming focus are highlighted, and several suggestions concerning future research needs are also presented.

Recent research on the interfacial characteristics of carbon nanotube-polymer nanocomposites is reviewed. The state of knowledge in the characteristics of the interface between the carbon nanotubes and the polymer matrix is presented. Emphasis is placed on the progress of the relationships between interfacial characteristics and nanocomposite properties. Research methodologies used in studying the characteristics of the interface are described. Challenges and opportunities associated with the characterization of the interface are discussed. Critical issues in the research on the interactions at the interface are reviewed, and the advantages and disadvantages of covalent and non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes are delineated. Furthermore, how the properties of the nanocomposites depend on the characteristics of the interface is discussed. The latest developments of the techniques for interface characterization are reviewed, and the strengths and limitations of these techniques are discussed. Potential topics of oncoming focus are finally highlighted.

Interfacial characteristics of carbon nanotube-polymer composites: A review

Large-scale morphology, in particular meander bend depth, bar dimensions, and bifurcation dynamics, are greatly affected by the deflection of sediment transport on transverse bed slopes due to gravity and by secondary flows. Overestimating the transverse bed slope effect in morphodynamic models leads to flattening of the morphology, while underestimating leads to unrealistically steep bars and banks and a higher braiding index downstream. However, existing transverse bed slope predictors are based on a small set of experiments with a minor range of flow conditions and sediment sizes, and in practice models are calibrated on measured morphology. The objective of this research is to experimentally quantify the transverse bed slope effect for a large range of near-bed flow conditions with varying secondary flow intensity, sediment sizes (0.17–4 mm), sediment transport mode, and bed state to test existing predictors. We conducted over 200 experiments in a rotating annular flume with counterrotating floor, which allows control of the secondary flow intensity separate from the streamwise flow velocity. Flow velocity vectors were determined with a calibrated analytical model accounting for rough bed conditions. We isolated separate effects of all important parameters on the transverse slope. Resulting equilibrium transverse slopes show a clear trend with varying sediment mobilities and secondary flow intensities that deviate from known predictors depending on Shields number, and strongly depend on bed state and sediment transport mode. Fitted functions are provided for application in morphodynamic modeling.

Engineering calculation methods for turbulent flow

A magnetic abrasive finishing process is a method of non-traditional precision machining in which the finishing process is completed using magnetic force and magnetic abrasives. In this research, a STS 304 cylindrical workpiece was finished using a magnetic abrasive finishing process at 30,000 rpm, and the roughness, roundness, and changes in the micro-diameter were investigated. The study showed that it is possible to control the micro-diameter and weight of the STS 304 cylindrical workpiece by using a near linear approach. Surface roughness as fine as 0.06㎛ (Ry) and roundness as fine as 0.12㎛ (LZS) were achievable by using a diamond paste with 1㎛ particles. Vibrational motion applied to the workpiece improved the surface roughness. The improvement of the surface roughness was achieved because the vibrational motion effectively removes unevenness in the rotational direction and the direction orthogonal to it.
