Journal ArticleDOI
Local immune response to food antigens drives meal-induced abdominal pain
Javier Aguilera-Lizarraga,Morgane Florens,Maria Francesca Viola,Piyush Jain,Lisse Decraecker,Iris Appeltans,Maria Cuende-Estevez,Naomi Fabre,Kim Van Beek,Eluisa Perna,Dafne Balemans,Nathalie Stakenborg,Stavroula Theofanous,Goele Bosmans,Stephanie Mondelaers,Gianluca Matteoli,Sales Ibiza Martínez,Sales Ibiza Martínez,Cintya Lopez-Lopez,Josue Jaramillo-Polanco,Karel Talavera,Yeranddy A. Wouters,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +45 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify and characterize a peripheral mechanism that underlies food-induced abdominal pain, thereby creating new possibilities for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and related abdominal pain disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preoperative administration of the 5-HT4 receptor agonist prucalopride reduces intestinal inflammation and shortens postoperative ileus via cholinergic enteric neurons
Nathalie Stakenborg,Evelien Labeeuw,Pedro J. Gomez-Pinilla,Sebastiaan De Schepper,Raymond Aerts,Gera Goverse,Giovanna Farro,Iris Appeltans,Elisa Meroni,Michelle Stakenborg,Maria Francesca Viola,Erika Gonzalez-Dominguez,Goele Bosmans,Yeranddy A. Alpizar,Albert Wolthuis,André D'Hoore,Kim Van Beek,Simon Verheijden,Marleen Verhaegen,Rita Derua,Etienne Waelkens,Milena Moretti,Cecilia Gotti,Patrick Augustijns,Karel Talavera,Pieter Vanden Berghe,Gianluca Matteoli,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +27 more
TL;DR: Preoperative, but not postoperative treatment with prucalopride prevents intestinal inflammation and shortens POI in both mice and human, indicating that preoperative administration of 5-HT4R agonists should be further evaluated as a treatment of POI.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vagus nerve stimulation dampens intestinal inflammation in a murine model of experimental food allergy.
Goele Bosmans,Iris Appeltans,Nathalie Stakenborg,Pedro J. Gomez-Pinilla,Morgane Florens,Javier Aguilera-Lizarraga,Gianluca Matteoli,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +7 more
TL;DR: The effect of vagotomy (VGX) and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on the development and severity of experimental food allergy is investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ephrin‐B2 signaling in the spinal cord as a player in post‐inflammatory and stress‐induced visceral hypersensitivity
Stavroula Theofanous,Morgane Florens,Iris Appeltans,Alexandre Denadai Souza,John N. Wood,Mira M. Wouters,Guy E. Boeckxstaens +6 more
TL;DR: The spinal ephrin‐B2/EphB pathway in VHS is evaluated in 2 murine models of VHS, that is, postinflammatory TNBS colitis and maternal separation (MS).
Journal ArticleDOI
Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Prucalopride Have Anti-Inflammatory Properties and Improve Postoperative Ileus in Human
