Journal ArticleDOI
Association between biological properties of human immunodeficiency virus variants and risk for AIDS and AIDS mortality.
M. Tersmette,J M Lange,R. E. Y. De Goede,F. De Wolf,J. K. Eeftink-Schattenkerk,Peter Th. A. Schellekens,R. A. Coutinho,J. G. Huisman,Jaap Goudsmit,Frank Miedema +9 more
TL;DR: Zidovudine treatment in the symptom-free period seemed to delay the onset of AIDS in all risk groups, although stabilisation of CD4+ cell numbers was observed only in individuals with non-syncytium-inducing HIV variants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection and subtyping of HIV-1 isolates with a panel of characterized monoclonal antibodies to HIV p24gag.
M. Tersmette,I.N. Winkel,M. Groenink,Rob A. Gruters,R.P. Spence,Eric Saman,G van der Groen,Frank Miedema,J. G. Huisman +8 more
TL;DR: The serotype of sequential isolates obtained from 17 individuals over a 1 1-2- to 2 1/2-year period did not change, suggesting a limited in vivo p24 variation over time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of six enzyme immunoassays for antibody against human immunodeficiency virus
H. W. Reesink,J. G. Huisman,M Gonsalves,I.N. Winkel,A.C Hekker,P. N. Lelie,W. Schaasberg,C. Aaij,J.A.vander Does,Jan Desmyter,Jaap Goudsmit +10 more
TL;DR: Six commercial enzyme immunoassays (EIA) evaluated are suitable tests for anti-HIV screening in samples from patients and blood donors and in a blood-donor panel, with immunoblot analysis as the confirmatory test for antibodies against human immunodeficiency virus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human immunodeficiency virus infection studied in CD4-expressing human-murine T-cell hybrids
M. Tersmette,J. J. M. Van Dongen,Paul R. Clapham,R. E. Y. De Goede,Ingrid L. M. Wolvers-Tettero,A. Geurts van Kessel,J. G. Huisman,R A Weiss,Frank Miedema +8 more
TL;DR: The findings imply that expression of the CD4 antigen on the cell surface is not sufficient for productive infection with HIV, and the infectivity block observed in these hybrids seems to occur at the level of virus penetration, presumably at the stage of membrane fusion events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of five different filters for the removal of leukocytes from red cell concentrates.
Ruby N.I. Pietersz,I. Steneker,H. W. Reesink,W.J.A. Dekker,E. J. M. Al,J. G. Huisman,J. Biewenga +6 more
TL;DR: The leukocyte depletion capacity and performance of 5 filters designed for filtration of red cell concentrates (RCC) were compared by counting leukocytes, measuring red cell volumes and by histological examination of the filters after use.
