Pattern Recognition with Fuzzy Objective Function Algorithms

Clustering is the unsupervised classification of patterns (observations, data items, or feature vectors) into groups (clusters). The clustering problem has been addressed in many contexts and by researchers in many disciplines; this reflects its broad appeal and usefulness as one of the steps in exploratory data analysis. However, clustering is a difficult problem combinatorially, and differences in assumptions and contexts in different communities has made the transfer of useful generic concepts and methodologies slow to occur. This paper presents an overview of pattern clustering methods from a statistical pattern recognition perspective, with a goal of providing useful advice and references to fundamental concepts accessible to the broad community of clustering practitioners. We present a taxonomy of clustering techniques, and identify cross-cutting themes and recent advances. We also describe some important applications of clustering algorithms such as image segmentation, object recognition, and information retrieval.

A new instrument for measuring consensus in small decision making groups is developed. The instrument is based on mathematical procedures from the theory of fuzzy sets. A pilot study is reported in which the instrument was applied to eight classroom groups. Implications of this new measuring instrument for future research in group decision making are outlined.

DROP size distributions for irrigation spray nozzles, such as may be used in low or reduced pressure sprinkler systems, were measured with a calibrated stain technique. Similar data from other sources, measured with photographic or pellet techniques, were also obtained. The distributions were fitted with the upper limit log normal (ULLN) distribution function. ULLN parameters for each distribution are tabulated. Distribution characteristics such as the volume median drop size may be calculated directly from the ULLN parameters. A simple regression model for predicting ULLN parameters as functions of nozzle style, size and pressure is proposed and fitted to data for flooding and smooth flat plate spray nozzles. The fit of model to data was evaluated by comparing measured and predicted values for 50th (median) and 99th (volume) percentile drop sizes, and by directly comparing measured and predicted distribution functions. The distance between functions was defined analogous to the Euclidean distance between points in space, leading to definition of a pseudo r2 for the (functional) regression model. The fit between data and model for the two nozzle types was quite good. The models were used to explore the influence of nozzle size and pressure on drop size distributions for the two types of nozzles.

An interactive computer simulation which erects models of sedimentary geometries by filling in a two-dimensional basin from both sides with a combination of clastic sediment and/or in situ and transported carbonate sediments is described The simulation program is implemented in “C” using graphical plotting functions Data entry, including the initial basin configuration, the local tectonic behavior, the sea level curves, the amount and source direction of clastic sediment, and the growth rates of carbonates as a function of water depth is performed interactively Geometries of clastic and carbonate sediments evolve through time and respond to tectonic movement, eustasy, and sedimentation Clastic modeling includes sedimentary bypass and erosion and sedimentation in alluvial and coastal plains, marine shelf, basin slope, and basin floor settings Carbonate modeling includes progradation, the development of hard grounds, downslope aprons, keep up, catch up, back step, and drowned reef settings as well as lagoonal and epeiric settings Also included in the model are extensional vertical faulting of the basin, sediment compaction, and isostatic response to sediment loading Sediment geometries are plotted on a graphics terminal as they are computed, so the user can immediately view the results Based on these observations, parameters can be changed and the program rerun until the user is satisfied with the resultant geometry This paper includes output showing the simulation's sensitivity to eustatic sea level variations, and variations in sedimentation and subsidence rates Also shown are outputs demonstrating the modeling of some examples from the geologic section in the Permian Basin of west Texas and the Upper Permian of the Sichuan Basin
