Pattern Recognition with Fuzzy Objective Function Algorithms

Clustering is the unsupervised classification of patterns (observations, data items, or feature vectors) into groups (clusters). The clustering problem has been addressed in many contexts and by researchers in many disciplines; this reflects its broad appeal and usefulness as one of the steps in exploratory data analysis. However, clustering is a difficult problem combinatorially, and differences in assumptions and contexts in different communities has made the transfer of useful generic concepts and methodologies slow to occur. This paper presents an overview of pattern clustering methods from a statistical pattern recognition perspective, with a goal of providing useful advice and references to fundamental concepts accessible to the broad community of clustering practitioners. We present a taxonomy of clustering techniques, and identify cross-cutting themes and recent advances. We also describe some important applications of clustering algorithms such as image segmentation, object recognition, and information retrieval.

Data clustering: a review

Data Mining - Concepts and Techniques.

First, we identify an algorithmic defect of the generalized learning vector quantization (GLVQ) scheme that causes it to behave erratically for a certain scaling of the input data. We demonstrate the problem using the IRIS data. Then, we show that GLVQ can behave incorrectly because its learning rates are reciprocally dependent on the sum of squares of distances from an input vector to the node weight vectors. Finally, we propose a new family of models -- the GLVQ-F family -- that remedies the problem. We derive algorithms for competitive learning using the GLVQ-F model, and prove that they are invariant to all positive scalings of the data. The learning rule for GLVQ-F updates all nodes using a learning rate function which is inversely proportional to their distance from the input data point. We illustrate the failure of GLVQ and success of GLVQ-F with the ubiquitous IRIS data. © (1995) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. We write about the relationship between numerical patten recognition and neural-like computation networks. Extensive research that proposes the use of neural models for a wide variety of applications has been conducted in the past few years. Sometimes justification for investigating the potential of neural nets (NNs) is obvious. On the other hand, current enthusiasm for this approach has also led to the use of neural models when the apparent rationale for their use has been justified by what is best described as 'feeding frenzy'. In this latter instance there is at times concomitant lack of concern about many 'side issues' connected with algorithms (e.g., complexity, convergence, stability, robustness and performance validation) that need attention before any computational model becomes part of an operation system. These issues are examined with a view towards guessing how best to integrate and exploit the promise of the neural approach with there efforts aimed at advancing the art and science of pattern recognition and its applications in fielded systems in the next decade.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Pattern recognition, neural networks, and artificial intelligence

In this note we review the object and relational c-means algorithms, and the theory asserting their duality in case the relational data corresponds to an inner-product induced measure of distance between each pair of corresponding object data. Past numerical results are given here along with new extensions in order to study the effect of the choice of pairwise distance measure on the relational partition obtained.
