Scientists' warning to humanity on insect extinctions
Pedro Cardoso,Philip S. Barton,Klaus Birkhofer,Filipe Chichorro,Charl Deacon,Thomas Fartmann,Caroline Sayuri Fukushima,René Gaigher,Jan Christian Habel,Caspar A. Hallmann,Matthew J. Hill,Axel Hochkirch,Axel Hochkirch,Mackenzie L. Kwak,Stefano Mammola,Stefano Mammola,Jorge Ari Noriega,Alexander B. Orfinger,Alexander B. Orfinger,Fernando Pedraza,James S. Pryke,Fabio de Oliveira Roque,Fabio de Oliveira Roque,Josef Settele,Josef Settele,John P. Simaika,Nigel E. Stork,Frank Suhling,Carlien Vorster,Michael J. Samways +29 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a group of conservation biologists deeply concerned about the decline of insect populations, reviewed what we know about the drivers of insect extinctions, their consequences, and how extinctions can negatively impact humanity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Terrestrial invertebrates as bioindicators: an overview of available taxonomic groups
TL;DR: Although indicator taxa are considered to be generally unreliable as broad indicators of biodiversity, they may serve a useful function in identifying ecological characteristics or monitoring the effects of habitat management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Solutions for humanity on how to conserve insects
Michael J. Samways,Philip S. Barton,Klaus Birkhofer,Filipe Chichorro,Charl Deacon,Thomas Fartmann,Caroline Sayuri Fukushima,René Gaigher,Jan Christian Habel,Jan Christian Habel,Casper A. Hallmann,Matthew J. Hill,Axel Hochkirch,Laura Kaila,Mackenzie L. Kwak,Dirk Maes,Stefano Mammola,Stefano Mammola,Jorge Ari Noriega,Alexander B. Orfinger,Alexander B. Orfinger,Fernando Pedraza,James S. Pryke,Fabio de Oliveira Roque,Fabio de Oliveira Roque,Josef Settele,Josef Settele,Josef Settele,John P. Simaika,Nigel E. Stork,Frank Suhling,Carlien Vorster,Pedro Cardoso +32 more
TL;DR: The fate of humans and insects intertwine, especially through the medium of plants as mentioned in this paper, and despite a sound philosophical foundation, recognized ethical values, and scientific evidence, globally we are performing poorly at instigating effective insect conservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fungal Planet description sheets: 107–127
Pedro W. Crous,Brett A. Summerell,Roger G. Shivas,Treena I. Burgess,Cony Decock,Léanne L. Dreyer,L. L. Granke,David Guest,G.E.St.J. Hardy,Mary K. Stukely,Kálmán Vánky,B.J. Webster,Sofia T. Windstam,Johannes Z. Groenewald +25 more
TL;DR: Novel species of microfungi described in the present study include the following from Australia and South Africa; Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS DNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conservation and monitoring of invertebrates in terrestrial protected areas
Melodie A. McGeoch,Hendrik Sithole,Michael J. Samways,John P. Simaika,James S. Pryke,Mike D. Picker,Charmaine Uys,Adrian J. Armstrong,Ansie S. Dippenaar-Schoeman,Ian Engelbrecht,Brigitte Braschler,Michelle Hamer +11 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such integration is relevant and possible, and the relative suitability of seven key taxa in this context is assessed, and a series of recommendations for mainstreaming invertebrates in conservation planning, surveys and monitoring in and around protected areas are outlined.
